4runner vs. Highlander

I would not go with the V8 since it comes with AWD. Not a fan of them (my other vehicle has it. Eyahchhh!

What are you talking about. The V6 in 4HI is the same as the V8 in 4HI. It is not AWD in the sense of Subaru/Audi or what have you in case thats what you were comparing it to.

Maybe I'm just confused but why aren't you a fan of AWD? Even if the 4Runners 4HI was the same as the aforementioned Subaru or Audi AWD systems (which it isn't) whats wrong with that?

personally i think the new 4runners are crap. The 3rd gens had the best 4wd's out of ne other truck i tested even jeep wrangler. The new runners use thal knob stuff where u turn a knob to get into 4 wheel thats not off road material u should have to shift into 4 wheel not press a button...i have a 97 runner and i have to shift into 4wheel like its a stick i love it..but thats just my opinion

BTW, what makes your 4runner's 4wd better than the Wrangler??

well conisdering my friend has a wrangler and we both went on the same trail and i made it through and his 4 wheel couldnt get him through that makes me think mines better....and no i dont think my 3rd gen is the shit its all stock cept for the subwoofers and head unit i put in there..n if u were smart enough to read my whole post it said that it was my opinion

no my life isnt sheltered i havent heard of manually locking hubs so what. i dont off road that often and just started learning about my truck cuz i have been wanting to do stuff

He's probably just a young kid. It's not his fault that he wasn't born yet when you had to get out of the truck to lock the hubs. We can tell him about the "good old days...." :

I've driven the new Highlander.

The interior size is larger than the first generation. The materials seemed okay, but I thought some of the dash materials were a downgrade from the previous gen (which I opine Toyota is doing with all their vehicles...). I had a difficult time finding a comfortable position for the drivers seat.
The longevity...it's a Toyota.
Driving: It is much smoother than the 4Runner. It does not drive or ride like a truck, because it's not. I did NOT like the steering. It was waaay over powered. I found it difficult to keep it going straight on the highway without constant input.
It can tow 5000 lbs now, which is more than any minivan.
If I was looking for that type of vehicle, I would probably end up with something else (like the Mazda or GMC). It's a nice vehicle, but it did not impress me.

I kind of like the drivers seat, but agree on the interior. The other thing I read, but wasn't able to "induce" (due to weather) was that a ton of stuff starts beeping etc if the snow function takes over - that would be very annoying. Does anyone know if they have the same stuff in the 4runner

The point of mike's question was about a general purpose daily driver in adverse conditions. This was also one of my considerations when stipulating 4x4 in a new car (I won't be in SoCal forever). Are you trying to say that, for that purpose, the '07 V8 was a bad choice?

my aunt has a highlander hybrid. like jungle jim sad it rides alot more like a car than a truck. The ride is smoother...good for a family vehicle if u want to do ne 4wheeling or anything obviously that wouldnt be a good choice but otherwise its a good car

Well, then your friend does not know how to drive! (Remind him to open his eyes when he off-roads!) It is pretty hard to beat a Wrangler off-road...and you can say forget it when it comes to the Wrangler Rubicon.

And your opinion is based on what? Your extremely limited off-roading experience?? Somehow, you came to the conclusion that your 4wd system is "the bomb"??

ok bro i didnt say it was the bomb i said my opinion is that a 4runners 4wd is better than a wranglers but i know that wranglers tend to be better on the trail...and dude that was the first time i have ever been on a trail so i cant judge so yes im gonna be the man here and admit i was wrong sorry i hurt ur feelings

The highlander AWD is that crappy one that's in my AWD Sienna, where the wheel with least resistance slips - sometimes helped by ABS to stop it. My Sienna has done well in snow - especially with snow tires. The 4runner 4wd system uses torsen differential - which is a much better 4wd system.


Bottom line, for snow up to 8 inches, you will be ok. But anything above that, I don't think you would do fine. The 4runner can probably go around 12 inches before it starts to get in serious trouble.

I can personally confirm that the 4th gen 4runner can go through 13-ish inches of snow on flat ground, and more with a running start (don't stop though)

I've plowed more than one trail in the snow here in alaska. Most of them end with a small berm where my front end was plowing snow.
