Sometimes the insurance payout vs how much your rate goes up isn't bad. I had a totaled out car got paid 3500 and the total increase in my rste over the new 3 years was only 1g. I had only been with my insurance for 2-3 years by then and now I have 7 years with them and large accident forgiveness.

My heart goes out to you and I applaud your bravery but this is why I'm terrified of letting anyone else drive my truck. My requirements to do so are a minimum of holding a license for 2yrs with no accidents and another year of daily driving a manual to drive it without me, and your own insurance is required. I've been called stuck up an selfish for it but she's my only child.
My girlfriend isn't allowed to drive my truck yet but she's getting pretty damn good at driving her 5speed miata I taught her on. Maybe one day she can drive the truck. Maybe. Probably not.
It's always best to teach people in an underpowered little light car with good brakes (and being off gravel helps too), hence the Miata. I learned manual on a dirt bike and that knowledge and coordination transfered well into cars but my first car was still a small light hard stopper.
I feel for you and your truck man but the damage doesnt look too extensive so here's hopeing for a speedy recovery on all parties. Most likely the most damage has been done to your girlfriend's confidence. Even with no accidents and really no troubles I've seen a fair share of tears shed and a few quitters from teaching people manual. It's not for everyone. Hopefully she will get back in the saddle.
Would it be possible to get your truck covered under your girlfriend's insurance as she was the driver and you pay the deductible to help out her financial situation?
If nothing else, location dependant I have a black hood you could have But if your in km/h chances are your a bit farther than a weekend drive from FL.

I phoned my friend...who is a fireman, that counts as reporting it to the authorities right? That was in my "holy shit I've been involved in a motor vehicle accident" phase, which lasted about 3 minutes before I got into my "authorities aren't going to improve this situation" phase which I've been in my whole life.
Oh, and, it should be fixed pretty quick!

Completely off-topic, but:
When I was 20, I got a summer job as a porter at a BMW dealership. I didn't tell the service manager I didn't know how to drive a stick. Taught myself that summer on 328s and a few 540s. By the end of the summer I was a pro at driving manual.
BMWs have really forgiving clutches.

That is exactly my total nightmare... sorry to say!
When I read your post I just wanted to cry out in pain! I had to glance outside and make sure my truck was still safe, as my L driver had only just been behind the wheel...
I taught my Wife and 3 sons to drive... I've really had an urge to get my hands on a stick shift and get my wife and kids driving a std.... but you've cured me!!!! Sorry for that!
Over the years, I've replaced 3 clutches none of which cost me more than $300.... in my garage. I've also had an auto tranny completely fail, I had it replaced (by a shop) $2600 later, and I've had 3 other vehicles with auto tranny problems--- all of which I got rid of before a complete failure. Just for the $$$, its really hard to ignore. Unfortunately, my Wife can't drive a standard, so I maybe I should accept it....
You're right, ICBC isn't sympathetic. The only person I know that ever received an insurance payout that was actually equal to fair, was a former co-worker--- she had worked in PR and Human Resource Management for years, she was totally prepared with receipts going back to the vehicle purchase... AND she was hit. She had all the leverage. It still took her several weeks of negotiations before she received a payout.
I must say your "donner" vehicle looks pretty good... good luck with your "project" and I really hope to see it restored. Your gf must have been totally crushed... my Wife had an "oopy" when she was learning, it took her months to get back behind the wheel!

Me and a buddy have had a long standing bet on the outcome of being locked behind one of those gates. He seems to think you can bust right through it, I on the other hand expected what happened to you. Either way I'm glad your getting it back on the road, I'm sure you learned a ton on the rebuild, not that it helps any but, lemonade out of lemons, right?
