4runner warm start problem

Hello all,

I have a 99 4runner 6cyl w/ 66k miles and I'm experiencing warm start issues. When engine is cold, starting is not a problem, but if the engine is warm (after a drive and shutting down for 10 min), the engine doesn't want to start unless throttle is depressed.

Recent tuneup was done, including spark plugs, cleaned MAF, cleaned intake manifold, and changed fluids. I am thinking it's fuel related problems, either injector, FPR, fuel pump, main relay, or...

Does anyone else have the same problem? What seem to be the issue here?

TIA

Only a SWAG here because I have not had your problem yet. Starting seems to be a weak point with 4R's. My GM cars always pop off very quick. My 2001 SR5 hot or cold allways takes more cranking. But anyway I would guess it could be a cold start valve that is sticking - open and causing flooding.
I'm not sure where to have you check because all I have done on mine so far is regular maintenance.

thanks for the reply.

how will a cold start valve affect warm start problem? i have no problem starting the car when it's cold.

Thanks.

Your talking in circles

How am I talking in circles? Please enlighten me.

Anyhow, I think I know where the problem is: ICV.

-Guess I'm reading in circles. Back to my first reply-sticking cold start valves and/or injectors can cause warm start problems because they are working as a choke so to speak.

Me too!

I have a similar problem with my 1990 4runner. Once it's warm, I can restart it if I do so within 10 minutes. If not it runs so rough when I try to restart it that I can't keep it running. After 30 minutes or so it cools off enough to start up and run like new. We suspect a sensor, but haven't figured it out yet. When we do, I'll let you know.

Do a search on the ICV (Idle Control Valve). I have warm starting issues and I R&R'd the t-body and disassembled the ICV and cleaned it very thoroughly with a toothbrush and toyota carb cleaner. I helped a lot, but I still have the occasional warm start issue.

If you have lots of money, just replace the ICV valve.
