fourwd1, I'm sure, doesn't have anything negative to say about people taking their 4th gens on trails. But salt and sand build up over time as it is near impossible to get all of the sand off. My 4Runner is a 1998 and I have no plans of it seeing sand as long as its my daily driver and actually worth something.
If I had a 1st gen I'd be the first guy on the beach!

Maybe they don't get wheeled out in Virgina...but here in Arizona they get USED!!!

I live on the beach! I was a touch hesitant at first to go on the beach much, and I DO limit myself.....
Rust being the issue, i can tell you that my skid plate will probably fall off in a couple of years at the rate its oxidizing.
And as far as the 4th gen runner in sand, I personally think it is VERY IMPRESSIVE. even with the stock dunflops.
Id say that 90% of the offroading I do is in sand, all depths and grain sizes and I have never once gotten stuck or close.

I would have to argue that alot of the pictures on this thread are of jackep up 4rs on bigger wheels and nice AT tires... mine does great stock, and i mean stock, still the original tires with 63,000 miles on them (need to be replaced). The only things I have done are interior and a K&N. It out perofrms the 98 pathfinder I had by leaps and bounds and except for ground clearance issues, I have been able to go anywhere my buddy can in his lifted CJ5.

I disagree that T4R is not only for street use.
Look at mine, have a 2wd and I take it off roading up to it's limits.
Going up a (blue) moderate rated trail.
Photo op for my wife decending the Tejon Trail.
Climbing up, dirt flying.
Reached top of another moderate rated trail hill.
Front drops while blazing down trail after hitting a big dip.
My passengers fly up coming out of dip.
Deep in view of a moderate trail.

I do try to be as diligent with rinses (both body & undercarriage) as possible.
I really dont have to drive on the beach much, I live 2 blocks away so i usually just ride my skateboard or bike.
but nearly ALL of my offroading is in sand...Florida.... North Americas sand dune.

Hollister was pretty cool, went with my gf and one of our friends this past Sunday..got lost on the damm trail and ended up going down part of a black diamond...that was fun and no body damage...can't wait till i install my locker!
