4Runners everywhere!!!

Hey Yall. I have a white 97 sr5 5speed 3.4 just for backstory. So I've noticed that where I go to school there are at least 20 other 3rd gen 4runners mostly limited versions. I was just just wondering what I could do to my own 4runner to set it apart from all the others. Simple mods to improve looks, sound, drivability? Nothing to expensive because Im 16 and funds are limited. Ive already removed the running boards. Just throw some suggestions out there Im open to ideas.

Hey man,

You've got a solid base for a fun truck. Look up bilstein lifts 3 inch kit. Only 350$. I'm currently running it as my 99 limited is still a daily driver and it's a good set up. With it being a little cheaper it will help you buy a 265 size tire to balance it out to get the look you want.

JK JK lol I bet you may be able to peice together a cheap lift from the junkyard (TRD Tundra fronts) and LC coils for the rear.

Seriously, the best way to set it apart from the others is to keep it clean. Get the paint corrected and the exterior trim pieces looking right and keep it that way. A clean vehicle always stands out regardless of the other mods.

Haha silly 5th gener.....you can get a cb radio black out Offroad rims or alot of stickers for hp gain lol what I did when I first joined was started on page one of what did you do to your 3rd gen today and read all the way through it alot of great ideas and info.

cheapest mod to do to set yourself apart is pick up a few cans of paint of plasti dip and do wheels and whatever else you feel like doing

As far as lifts go you get what you pay for. If your shocks are still ok a spacer lift will be just fine for you but 80% of people who spacer lift change it soon down the road. I have a 2002 that I bought to haul my new Weimaraner around in. Well, I used that as a excuse because I really just wanted a 3rd gen. I really didn't want the new pup in my tundra either though. I have the mod virus now. It's an addiction. I keep doing basic maintenance to it also. Replacing stuff that prob doesn't even need replaced yet.

Don't get black rims is my first thought. Keep the rims a machined look, not bright get a sun tan from the reflection off the chrome look. Maybe even a very light gun metal or dark silver.

My wise ass answer would have been......get a snorkel, TRD stickers to add 15 HP, a K&N cold air intake for another 15 HP, Magnaflow exhaust system as loud as possible because the louder the noise the more HP is being generated. What this guy said. These are almost twenty years old. Once you stop the paint care the cosmetics start going down the shitter really quickly and they start looking like $1500 craigslist special. A very clean 3rd Gen will stand out. Put some Vinylex on the flares and bumper valance if they start fading. Please keep Plastidip and flat black spray paint to a minimum, ESPECIALLY on large pieces. It starts to look like a fixer-upper when too much is used, if you get me.

If you restore it to how it looked when it was brand new on the lot, you're definitely gonna get some compliments. My truck had 2 crushed bumper, rusted-gashed fender, lift was smashed and rusted and the clear coat on hood and roof had gone to boo boo. Also the rear passenger side door was a different color. Large splintered windshield as well. All it took was a minor accident and my dad being a professional painter to give me the mod bug. Now that it's been repainted, restored, repaired, and slightly modded I get compliments all the time. Guy wanted to trade me his sequoia the other day haha. Fix what's wrong with it now, then beef the tires I say first. If your smiling when you look at it, then others will too and you'll have pride in it. These trucks just look good, especially clean.

By virtue of the fact that you have the much cooler (IMO) V6 W/5-speed, you could just be satisfied with that. Keeping it clean, waxed, and maintained, would be my priority on a limited budget.

Yup. I've had that link bookmarked for years. Probably because it is a clone of mine. This forum tends to focus so much on the usual bumpers and lifts that that the looks of a clean, stock 4Runner go under-appreciated. I don't really understand the hate for chrome either as they are a 90's vehicle after all.

I would keep it clean and well maintained. A satoshi grill is cheap and easy to do. I would leave the grill surround chrome, I wish I did after painting it.

Wow... thank you guys so much. i never though that i would get this much response to one of my posts. i have it pretty clean as it is. but there is always more to do. this pic is right after a wash so it is extra shiny. Im going to go to a pick n' pull to try to find a rear bumper because it is pretty dinged up from a lifetime of pulling trailers. as it is it sits pretty level and Im not sure Im going to lift it in the near future. Ive been looking around on here all day and it seems that an e locker would make my truck complete. any experience with these? Price? Availibility?
