Next up was Jiquilillo on the Pacific coast. Found an awesome backpackers paradise right in the beach and spent a few days just lazing in the hammocks and enjoying the surf.
Did I mention that the beer is less than a dollar in Nicaragua? I like it here. Very much.
This place was awesome, self sustainable, all the staff was volunteer and they have back to the community in every way that they could. It was way off the beaten path. It was nice to just chill for a few days with people from all over the world, it was actually quite busy when we were there, about 30 people. Ran in to a couple from New Jersey in a 1st gen Tacoma with a RTT making their way down to South America, check them out on Facebook if your so inclined - SardineTaco
From there we headed further south to Isle de Ometepe. Twin volcanos in the middle of Lake Nicaragua.
We took the ferry over from Rivas, which was about an hours ride in some pretty rough water. Once on the island we tried to find a hostel that we had researched, being that it was nighttime by the time we rolled around to the right part of the island, we saw a sign for the place we were looking for. We pulled over to check it out, ya know cause signs are USUALLY in front of the place, and we're greeted by a wonderful family who came out to the truck and welcomed us with open arms.
We inquired about camping and they said SI!! You can camp right here on the water!! They showed us a beautiful spot literally feet from the waters edge. We asked how much, they said nothing. It was at this point that we realized something was up, asked one of the kids if this was the hostel and he said no, it's around the corner. At this point there was no way we were passing up the free camping and the awesome hospitality.
We set up our tents, they made us dinner, and the old man pulled out the guitar and started playing local songs for us. He was so happy to have some Canadians staying with them, he called his friend in Minnesota just to tell him. It was an awesome experience! And they were so nice, we stayed for a few days, mom made us breakfast every morning, and did some sightseeing around the island.
Probably some of the nicest people we've met on the trip.
