just heads up i bought 3oil filter from toyota parts from san francisco toyota.
it was 1 for $6.95 each. 3 or more for 3.95 each.

Not a bad price from SF Toyota. I don't know if they still have coupons in Advertiser for other parts. They're a good dealership with nice folks with the exception of one guy who works in the service dept.

I just go get the Express Lube at my local dealership (Daly City Toyota). Basic oil change plus filter (plus fluid topups) costs $36 total plus tax (and about a half hour wait). I could barely do it cheaper than that myself.

that's right. however, for many members, knowing the job is done right when you DIY is worthwhile, not just the $ out of pocket.

9. Take a funnel, insert it in the oil fill hole, and slowly pour 5-1/2 quarts of oil into the motor.

I cut the bottom out of an oil bottle I saved from the last oil change to use for a funnel so when I am finished I just throw it away so nothing to clean.

Rubber cap under oil filter

FYI, this "rubber cap" at the bottom of the oil filter "cup" is part #: 90339-07016. It lists for $5.37. Some people have said that they don't have it. It's not in the maintenance section of Partznet.com, so I thought I would provide the part number for those interested :nerd:

It is kind of funny, every time I take that rubber cap off and struggle with it, I am tempted to not put it back on. I always put it back on since that is the way it came. My thought is, it shouldn't leak out until you start to unscrew the filter and by that time you should have a cup under the filter to catch any oil.

I guess I shouldn't complain about the rubber cap, the 4.0 V6 is one of the easiest engines to change the oil. The older 3.4 V6 found in the 3rd generation is one of the hardest oil changes to do.

If I should lose that rubber cap, I doubt I would pay $5.37 to replace it.

What I did was added 3 ft of "fuel/oil grade, whatever" tubing to the nipple and have it end out at the bottom to drain in the pan... and I keep it there with zip ties.
I guess it doesn't matter either way thou, putting a empty quart container under there is easy enough.

At the risk of a minor thread hijack I'm adding the pics to help with the oil filter. I'm also adding a general orientation for the drainplug to help avoid those "Oh crap, I just drained my transmission fluid, now what?" posts.:bash:

I am not able to get completely under the truck far-enough to see the oil pan drain bolt nor the transmission drain plug. I can reach but I can't see. If I use a 14 mm socket, which I understand is the correct size for the oil pan drain bolt, is there any risk of attaching it to something other than the oil pan drain bolt? Thanks

Argument is there is a bigger surface area for cleaning oil, BUT also the larger filter could possibly have some decrease in flow due to the larger size. It's moreso a go with what ya feel.

I noticed that you used the 5 quart container to change the oil, but the V6 takes 5.5. Did you add another half quart?

You won't be able to get all of the oil out when doing an oil change, plan on about .5qt being stuck somewhere in the system that you cannot get out. I've never needed more than one 5qt container to properly refill mine.

OEM only for me... I pay $4-5 per filter, or the Denso equivalent which is the same thing. Its not even a real cost premium over a other generic options. No reason not to use an OEM filter.
