4th Gen 4.0L $30 Oil Change and Filter Cross Refrence

I have been changing oil for over 40 years and I haven't never thought of, or heard of pulling out the dipstick to help drain the oil. I have taken the fill cap off, but this is a first.

Are you opposing it? Just asking, not spitting flames!

I would think it would be preferable to take the truck off the jack stands before getting inside and resetting the MAINT light.

Anyway, thanks, I never knew about the drain plug under the oil filter. No wonder I keep making a mess and have to soak up the extra oil under there with a towel.

Just an FYI----the stock oil filter for the V8 also fits V6, and that is what I use. I bought them in a case off of Ebay for cheap!

what is the differences between large size and small size? which one should i use?

what is the differences between large size and small size? which one should i use? I would prefer the larger: 1) More filtration media due to the larger physical size. 2) IMHO they're easier to grab by hand and tighten (and then loosen when the time comes). 3) There might be some infinitesimal advantage to the larger in the form of slightly lower oil temp (that's a stretch but in theory is true).

would it work for my 4runner also when i do oil change? It should work fine... That's a nice set. I am not sure you'll even need to jack it. I changed mine with no jacks (and did even before the minor lift and bigger tires). The creeper that's pictured won't be of much use though, you probably need to lay on the floor (or an old bedsheet or something). The creeper will raise your body and make it tough to get underneath the truck, especially if it's not on the jackstands.

Good idea...

using the old quart oil container to catch the oil filter run-off. I always held a small paper cup in the left hand while prying off the rubber cap with the fingernails of the other hand. Your method will be easier and I can eliminate fooling around with the rubber cap.

There's a NAPA Auto Parts store on 6731 Mission Street in Daly City.

The larger OEM filter that's readily available at the dealer for about the same price is 90915-YZZD3.

You can get the WIX 51516 filter (Same exact filter) on RockAuto.com for $4.50.

Every 5k is what most people do. With Mobil1 7.5k would probably be ok if you did mostly highway driving and changed it at least one a year. I'd just do 5k changes and not worry about it. If you want to use the Mobil1 that'd be a good choice but it does cost more.

yup thanks, just went to walmart today and loaded with penzoil platinum and it was still 23.00$$. cant wait to do my oil change, forgot to buy the funnel tho.

I just go get the Express Lube at my local dealership (Daly City Toyota). Basic oil change plus filter (plus fluid topups) costs $36 total plus tax (and about a half hour wait). I could barely do it cheaper than that myself.

I went to Walmart the other day and found Mobil 1 was now $0.50 cheaper than Pennzoil. I've got some Mobil 1 oil change stickers coming, so I'm gonna start to use that. I never stick to one oil for a while.

4Runners are the eaisest trucks to work on on the planet!!! I put in new brake pads in 1 hour!!!
