4th gen 4Runner Secrets?

As someone who frequently sleeps at rest areas w/ my truck running, I was annoyed by having the DRLs stay on after turning off the headlights......I was pleased to find out that all you need to do is set the parking brake, and turn the truck off and then crank it back up and the DRLs will be off.

Of course there is also a mod for this, but it's easy enough just to use the parking brake....

I also had only found the "secret" glovebox recently, now I use it for my registration and insurance cards so I don't have to dig through the other "stuff" that seems to collect in there (seems like everytime I leave Louisiana at night w/ my Florida plates I'm getting pulled over )

Actually my alarm goes RainMan on me sometimes. I press the Unlock button, and the lights come on, it beeps, the doors unlock, and when I open the door, the alarm goes off. WTF??

And I have pressed the lock button before and had the lights stay off for some odd reason...... Probably need to have it looked at some day.....

Mine does the same thing. Every now and then, I'll hit the unlock button, then as soon as I open the door, the alarm starts going off. It's pretty annoying.

I read on another site that you can change the volume of he beep when you lock the door by holding the unlock button down on the key fob then hitting the lock and window buttons to adjust the volume through 5 different levels, is that true? can anyone confirm this?

That would be cool if we could really adjust it. I saw something in the manual about it but all it says is to go to the dealer.

Does anyone have instructions on how to adjust the beep volume ourselves?

You can program your doors to lock either when shifting out of park or going over 13mph and you can program your doors to unlock when you shift into park or open the drivers door.

You can actually have both of these features......or either.....or neither !

Hey guys,
To turn off your seat belt chime in a MY2008 do the following:

1) make sure the trip meter is in ODO mode.

2) turn the key to the ON position (dont start)

3) within a few seconds of turning it to ON, press and hold the trip reset for 15 seconds

4) while holding the trip reset, buckle drivers seat belt

5) odo reading will change to "B-on"

6) press trip reset once to change to " B-off"

Turn off car.

All done!

PS Wear your belts!!!!!

I actually found the secret glovebox compartment on my own just after I purchased my '06 about a month ago.

I was surprised to find something in there....a portrait of Jesus. So even when alone I have a passenger riding with me. Ha. I'm being sarcastic, but I did leave it in there.

Thank you, thank you! The one thing I found disappointing about this truck was that I had to turn on and off the headlights. I always drive with them on, and since there was no buzzer when I forgot to turn them off, I was sure I'd kill the battery. I left the lights on today, and they went off on their own, awesome.

And that glovebox thing is sweet.

Did anyone mention rolling up your rear hatch window by inserting the key in the back hatch lock and twisting the key twice? Very useful instead of having to go inside the vehicle to roll the rear hatch up.

I discovered this for the first time today by accident, ha ha took me 4years to figure it out. Really happy about it, its always been a mission when I have the bike rack on to go up front to close it again. I should read this whole thread, who knows what I will learn today!

Not sure if this works with the V6 model, but my 4.7L can make $60 in gas disappear.

1) Fill vehicle with your choice of gas
2) Drive vehicle 320 miles
3) Open gas filler door and cap, and you will see the fuel from step 1 has disappeared. :bugeye:
4) Fill and repeat

Of course I do the above with a big smile on my face because I LOVE driving my baby!

Wow, thats sneaky, mine does it at around 375miles...

Adjusting the bluetooth send/receive volume:

Turn on the 4Runner
Press and hold the info button
Turn the headlights on/off ~4 times

The setting screen will come up and you can change your send (how lound people on the other end hear) and the receive (someone talks low, it automatically increases it) settings.

My 4Runner's moon roof came preprogrammed where with one touch, it would open or close the moon roof.

One time, this feature stopped working, and required me to hold the button down in order to open and close the moon roof.

Checking the manual, it showed me how to reprogram the one touch feature. I think it required inserting the driver key and then holding down the button.

Refer to your manual for detailed instructions.

How about "Rain clearing mirrors"? I just came across it in the owners manual of my '04. Seems there is some type of coating on the mirrors to shed rain. It says "some models" have it but does not say which ones. Sounds pretty cool if it works.

Hey Techno, I believe it is talking about the sport edition mirrors. They have a heating element in them that comes on with the rear window defroster and keeps the rain or fog or whatever of the mirror. Its a pretty cool feature, I use it a lot, especially on cold mornings when all the mirrors have frost on them.

Ha! After reading this thread I found the secret compartment in my 'new' 06. What did I find? All the purchase paperwork, temp registration and temp insurance card from the original owner. Pretty interesting.

Didn't see that..

You can roll down driver side window by 1 touch. But you can also roll it UP by one touch! I've never seen it on my Corolla or any other no-luxuries car.

If autoclosing doesn't work, you need to "train" the system - just open window and then press and hold closing button for about 2 sec after window fully closed.

It helps when you disconnected battery and hatch window suddenly stopped working - you need to train it as well

They have a heating element in them that comes on with the rear window defroster and keeps the rain or fog or whatever of the mirror. i wonder if this could be a mod for us non sport edition guys. ill have to see if i can find an extra connector in that area and see if maybe the heated mirrors can be added.

I would think it would work considering the only difference is the drivers switch has 2 positions in each direction, where as the others only have one for up and one for down.

yes it is pre-wire for heated mirrors, you'll just have to buy the heated mirror glass and they plug right in

Heaters are cool, no doubt but I believe this rain clearing thing is something else. My '04 is a LTD and maybe I should have said that. The description is on p.343 of the owners manual. See the attached scan.

Hey guys! :hello: Im new to T4R and my mom has a 2003 4runner SR5 v6 2wd w/70K miles
I just wanted to add to this great list....all of which I already new about

Did you guys know that two front seats make a bed/recliner?

1) scoot the seat all the way up
2) take the headrest off
3) recline the seat all the way down and they viola you got yourself a bed

I already knew about the headlights, door lock settings, start procedure, rear window, rear cuphold w/ tray, trash bag holder, etc. (bought the truck when I was in 5th grade rofl)

can anyone tell me if there is a way to cansel the auto up and auto down on the rear window i have two german shepard dogs and i allways have to watch that i dont hit the up and my puppys might have they head out the window and they might get hurt

If you hold down the bottom button on the remote it rolls down the back window; try that on a GS :biggrin2:
