4th gen 4Runner Secrets?

Cool feature: You can drive over stuff.

Very useful when one kid wants McDonald's and another wants Wendy's. You can just go over the curb and grass rather then venture back ut on the street.

Regarding the other features, I regularly have to re-engage the ignition on my wife's Odyssey because i'm used to just flicking the 4runner ignition. I also have a habit of hitting the lock button on the fob twice to cut off the lights, since I leave them on all the time.

Unfortunately you can't drive through deep water. :driving:

Hey guys,
To turn off your seat belt chime in a MY2008 do the following:

1) make sure the trip meter is in ODO mode.

2) turn the key to the ON position (dont start)

3) within a few seconds of turning it to ON, press and hold the trip reset for 15 seconds

4) while holding the trip reset, buckle drivers seat belt

5) odo reading will change to "B-on"

6) press trip reset once to change to " B-off"

Turn off car.

All done!

PS Wear your belts!!!!!

Abe

Love this! Very useful.

I'm wondering if this is just my truck... But the 2003's did not come with a tire pressure monitoring systems... BUT the 17" aluminum wheels still have the sensors in them.

Weird!

Mine didn't come with TPS. Maybe wheels were replaced, maybe there is no sensor, just same looking valve.

This is how to program a new remote!!!

1. Start with the key out of the ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and drivers door is unlocked.

2. Perform these steps within 5 seconds. A. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out. B. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds. A. Close then open the drivers door. B. Close then open the drivers door. C. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds. A. Close then open the drivers door. B. Close then open the drivers door. C. Insert the key into ignition and leave it in ignition. D. Close the drivers door. E. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF. F. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds. A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remtoe simutaneously for 1.5 seconds. B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, Press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming. If the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote was not accepted. C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.

7. Open drivers door.

Thanks! Needed that $69 at the dealer.

Summarize Thread?

Is there any summarized version of this thread? I love learning about these "secrets" but it is slow going filtering all the back and forth in here.

If you notice the rear wiper will swipe 3 times in the int setting when you 1st turn it on. If you move the switch to the high position and back down quickly it will function just like the front wipers. I for one don't like the 3 swipe feature.

My 2003 Mitsubishi Evolution 8 does the same thing.. Japanese thing maybe?

That's always annoyed me. I do the high to low trick too, to bypass that. Not sure if it was mentioned but I didn't know until just the other day that to spray the windshield fluid for the rear, you can put it to high and just turn it up one more time. I always thought it was stupid that you had to turn it off to spray, but I was the stupid one lol

This has probably been mentioned but I didn't feel like reading through 400+ posts. But a lot of our 4th gens have heated side mirrors that turn on when you push the rear defrost button. Turn on the rear defrost and then feel your side mirrors after a few minutes, if they're warm than you got them. (Just found this out this week after 2years of owning)

If equipped, the heated side mirrors have a seperate fuse than the rear window (in case you don't want to risk heating the rear window but still want clear side mirrors).... rear windows tend to shatter if one of the defroster lines are broken. Due to them being wired in parallel, the window will heat unevenly (if a line is broken) and conversely the glass will expand unevenly and snap.

Its funny you mentioned that because earlier this week I did a search to see if anyone had added a dedicated switch/button to just turn on the heated mirrors. I am not a fan of having to turn on the rear defrost in order to activate the heater mirrors. Especially after hearing so many stories of the rear window shattering while using the rear defrost. Every time I hit that button I get nervous. Does anyone know how difficult it would be to add a dedicate switch for the heated mirrors?? I am sure J.A. could shed some light on this

Sure you can add a dedicated switch if you like. I havent done that but from reviewing the wiring diagrams (03-05 and 06-09) it looks like you would do the following.

First of all lets review the standard operation;

Start control:
Turning the rear window defogger SW ON, with the ignition SW ON and the back door window fully closed, initiates operation of the rear window defogger and illuminates the indicator lamp for 15 minutes.

Stop control:
When any one of the following conditions exists, rear window defogger operation comes to a stop and the indicator lamp goes out.
∗ The ignition SW is turned from the ON position to either the ACC or OFF position.
∗ The rear window defogger SW is pressed ON again when rear window defogger operation is already under way.
∗ The back door window is open.

To add a dedicated switch to operate the heated mirrors only you would need to do the below:

1) Find the black with blue stripe wire that feeds into one side of the 10Amp heated mirror fuse.

2) Splice in a diode so that it would block 12V+ from going back up into the fuse and making its way to the black with red stripe wire that is also attached to one side of the 30Amp rear window defog fuse .

3) install a 12V switch with FUSE that will bring ignition based 12V+ to the black with blue stripe wire at a point after the blocking diode you installed.

4) make a mental note that the 15min timer would not operate with this dedicated mirror switch.

Good Luck!

Isn't this reason enough for a recall?

I've seen many announced mass recalls of Toyotas but never seen the 4Runner as part of it.
