If my interpretation of the schematic and design is correct, then yes, I think it would be.... but only if it could be proven through lab experiment this is what caused the rear glass to break... the rear defogger being wired in parallel with a borken wire and being turned on doesn't explain the melting plastic smell many report prior to the rear glass shattering.
Maybe burning of the wire insulation when the electrical system shorts out?

I don't think the breaking of a defogger line (if it did exist) on the glass and the burning electrical smell are related in any way whatsoever. 2 seperate issues in my mind... Good luck

Does anyone know if it is possible to switch the SR5 temp control computer for the Limited Dual Control? And if so, is there anything else that would be needed other than just the new panel, computer etc?

I'm about to pick up an 05 limited and wanted to know all the ins and outs first. I went through all 30 pages and came up with this list as the best ones. I literally copied and pasted peoples replies, sorry if I'm not giving credit to people..
1. If you hold down the bottom button on the remote it rolls down the back window
2. Everyone may already know this one, but if you have the JBL system in your 4Runner you can turn it on and off by pressing and holding the mode button on the steering wheel.
3. Also if you hold (forward/back) the station button on the steering wheel, you will hear a beep and the system will seek the next station (not the presets).
On the nav, if you press the map button as you are driving it will display the current street address number. This is very helpful when looking for house address number, especially at night.
4. My favorite is hitting the lock button a second time on your key fob if you realize that you've left your lights on as you walk away from the car. Lights out!
5. What about the tissue box holder under the center consol arm rest and the grocery bag clips in the cargo area?
6. Just in case no one has mentioned it, there is a trash bag holder that folds out behind the center console. Plastic shopping bags fit in the frame, but I use one of the hilux surf trash containers. Kind of cool and very useful as I hate having trash in the side door pockets.
7. the 2nd row/back seat cupholder extend out further if you pull it out to reveal a small tray.
8. To turn off your seat belt chime in a MY2008 do the following:
1) make sure the trip meter is in ODO mode.
2) turn the key to the ON position (dont start)
3) within a few seconds of turning it to ON, press and hold the trip reset for 15 seconds
4) while holding the trip reset, buckle drivers seat belt
5) odo reading will change to "B-on"
6) press trip reset once to change to " B-off”
9. Don't know if anyone mentioned this or not already, but it took me a month to find it. The arm rest folds open from the top, where you see the line in it. It makes for a great bottle prepare stationed if you're a Mom! Lol
10. Noticed today that the plastic removable cup holder partition in front of the gear shift is adjustable! Totally thought it was just a partition but accidentally knocked one of the plastic fingers to the side and thought I broke it. I can finally keep my Red Bulls safe now!
11. For the heat/ cooling control, the fan will automatically ramp up speed as the engine warms up then taper off as the cabin temp reaches the desired setting however the driver is able to select any of the blower locations as they see fit (feet, defrost, face, etc).
To enable it, select "AUTO" (I choose to turn off the A/C) then select the blower location you want. It will not work if you select any of the fan speeds.
"AUTO" will shut off when the blower location is selected but the fan will do its thing without the computer changing where the fan is blowing.
If you choose feet, it will remain blowing on your feet until the desired cabin temp is reached. If you are at a certain cabin temp, say, 70 and you want 80, the fan speed will increase until the cabin is at 80 then taper off.
This function remains as described until "AUTO" is selected or a certain fan speed is manually selected.
12. his is how to program a new remote!!!
1. Start with the key out of the ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and drivers door is unlocked.
2. Perform these steps within 5 seconds. A. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out. B. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds. A. Close then open the drivers door. B. Close then open the drivers door. C. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds. A. Close then open the drivers door. B. Close then open the drivers door. C. Insert the key into ignition and leave it in ignition. D. Close the drivers door. E. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF. F. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.
6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds. A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remtoe simutaneously for 1.5 seconds. B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, Press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming. If the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote was not accepted. C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.
7. Open drivers door.

I'm not sure if this was ever mentioned in here but if you partially remove the glove box (push the stop bumps in on the sides in allowing it to hang a little lower) behind it is an air filter for the in cabin ventilation. Its good to clean it once and a while and replace it every 3 or 4 years. Im thinkin that if not many people new about the hiddin cargo space just above it than even fewer will know about this.
14. I just read this whole thread and all the little tricks were great! But no one mentioned the small triangular compartment that's formed between the 2nd row seat backs and the rear shelf that's formed when the shelf is in position. I use it to store all of my tools so they don't get stolen.
15. It's to remind you to change the oil.
1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position
2. Set odometer/trip display to "ODO" mode
3. Turn ignition switch to "OFF" position
4. Depress and hold the Trip Meter "RESET" button while turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position
5. The service maintenance reminder light will:
i. Illuminate solidly for 3 seconds
ii. Blink for 2 seconds
iii. Illuminate solidly for 1 second
iv. Turn off
6. Release the Trip Meter "RESET" button
7. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position
8. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position and confirm that the service maintenance reminder light goes out.

3 small buttons
Ok I have been through the OM now and can't find them. Recently bought an 04 Sport V8, it has 3 small buttons in between the two personal lights at the front. They show up on P.127 of my manual but are not identified. Each has a raised pip 1,2,3 from left to right.
I know it will be an ahah moment can anyone i/d these please

Went through all the pages and haven't seen anything on this, but on my new to me '05 sport, in the rear passenger area by the dome lights there is a little lcd screen it looks like. Does anyone know what that is for? Have tried getting it to come on but haven't been able to get it to yet.

It is for people in the back to listen to their own radio station if they want. Mine came with a second remote, and you can get optional headphones for them. Extremely obsolete.

I found a fix for this stupid noise. look on your drive shaft. You will find two segments. One part of the shaft enters the other. You will see that it is shiny. That part needs grease, copaslip, high friction metal lube. I use to get it at stop and starts. Bonk, WTH. The dealer lubed it and it hasn't come back. Give that a try. Best part it, its next to free!
