I am wondering what security comes installed on 4Runners? I believe this must depend on the trim (limited, etc). I am targeting of getting Limited version and want to install some additional security elements. Does it make any sense (maybe the car already has everything it needs).. I found some interesting things overseas and want to order them now so they arrive in time I have my car..

It has some security on it. The engine won't start without a transponder key present. It'll honk the horn if the door is opened. A glass breakage sensor might be nice.

This may sound stupid but whats a transponder key? is it like the card key for the big german cars? just wanna know if I have it.
Exactly.... They steal the security systems and study them as to hack them.

there is a chip in the key that has a code that matches with the code in the computer. the truck wont start without the codes matching. in other words, if someone makes a copy of your key without the code, it still wont start.
it isnt really a special complicated feature, my 12 year old base model V6 mustang has it too

I've put together a ton of expensive stereo systems in my cars over the years and the only security system that works is a stealth system that you never play loud around where you park. Anything in plain site including a fancy car alarm will only attract would-be thieves rather than deter them.
BTW I've had my car broken into 3 times in my life and each time I had expensive equipment in view, finally learned my lesson...lol. My T4R came with the alarm which is only good if someone actually opens the door, but thieves know that nobody pays attention to honking anymore.
That said I have invested in alarms and miss mine from my old 4R for the remote start....mmmm...nothing like starting your car either from the lodge while skiing or while it's in the parking garage at the hospital
So if you do go for an aftermarket alarm definitely invest in the remote start option and for God's sake leave NOTHING in plain site!

If the thieves have enough time they can do anything they want. But most of the time if they fail to start the car right away they would not proceed.. So, this might be something they did not count for. Especially this thing is not detectable by scanners, etc..
Let's say I have a secret switch to disconnect gas pump. Would they investigate what is wrong in the middle of a day in a car lot?
Which is why the replacement keys are so frickin' expensive. Don't lose your key!
