So drivers were doing 100mph instead of the indicated 100kph (~60mph)????

I get a kick out of the concept of a Federal accuracy standard. I worked for a year in Tucson a few years ago.

The Interstate that goes South was selected as a Metric Awareness section. Funded by the Feds (of course).
Implemented by AZ.

They put color and font matched stickers over "mph" and "miles" on all the signs. The stickers said kph and kilometers respectively. They did not change the numbers, just the units labels.
It stayed this way the whole time I worked there.

Nobody noticed that 1 mph does not equal 1 kph ? Maybe it was a stealth IQ test of sorts.

Come to think of it that would really simplify the change over to metric we have been hearing about for 40 years.

...and the highway engineers were done with another road improvement, a very good one that made the destination instantly closer.

I did another check on driving around the loop 101 today, and it still consistantly was about 3% under reporting. I would say this is likely the case, but I will check when I get my GPS back.

This would mean that the trip computer on MPG is only around 7% optimistic, instead of 10%!

This is the only thing that I miss about my Explorer. I switched to 31x10.5/R15 on it and all I had them do was reprogram the computer with the new dimensions. To bad Toyota dealers can't program. Or can they?

Got the GPS back

from my bro-in-law today and ran some tests. Basically here's how it looks:

> Speedo dead on! (as others have said)

> Odo underreports 3.5% (as others have said)

> Trip computer average MPH low 1%


The speedometer couldn't have been closer. Setting the cuise as closely over the 65 MPH mark got me something like 65.34 MPH on the GPS.

GPS & milemarkers were dead on for a 10 mile stretch.

So bascially we all got an additional 1,000 miles on our bumper-to-bumper warranty!

In computing the MPG from my odometer, this means I'm getting 3.5% better mileage. Therefore the trip computer MPG is only off around 6-7% instead of the 10% I thought.

Sorry folks, I have been gone for too long. A Yellow Box is the best device I have found yet for adjusting the speedo or odo on a vehicle. I have them on both my motorcycles, they are plug and play and work great! As for the GPS accuracy, with my out board antenna and audible alarm when I loose signal I assure you my info is accurate. The GPS is the gospel in my case.
