4th Gen Exhaust

So, I have been wondering for a while now about exhaust. To me, for some reason, it feels like the car isn't old enough to have exhaust on it and have it look right. I have this notion that an 04 4Runner is too new-looking to put an exhaust system on.

What do you guys think? Exhaust or no exhaust? I don't like particularly loud, conversation-killing exhausts, I like them smooth and to sound like a very powerful, formidable car is coming down the road. Not like Billy Bob and Jimbo are coming in their 1974 Ford.

Make it a sleeper. I personally hate exhausts that sound like boats. Keep the same piping just change the muffler out.

Stay away from the Flowmaster 40 and Cherrybomb for sure if you don't like it to be somewhat loud.

Someone posted a video on here about a month ago and had a full exhaust on their V8 and it sounded pretty damn good.

When my rig was new if sounded like and electric car? So I added the Flowmaster (don't know what #) cut out the rez and put on a chrome slash cut tip off to the side. It's louder but I would not call it too loud - nothing like a Dodge Ram or full size truck.

Borla is the way to go. Get dual for sure. It looks good.

i have the TRD duals matched with magnaflow mufflers on my v8.... it's not loud, but it's not quiet either.

You should definetly get one.

I've heard gibson's aren't too loud , quiter then borla, magnaflow etc.

I do not understand your point at all about a car needing to look older to have an exhaust.
Yeah if you have a big rusty folgers can on the back i can see not wanting to put one on newer ride, but a nice looking exhaust can definetly make your car sound and look better.

I would go with an 18" magnaflow. like a 5" x 8"

No kidding. If I was sitting on a 1000 bucks I would do it. I'm looking for affordable shit here.

My question is this: would changing JUST the muffler make the car sound different? I have always been under the impression that a full cat-back is the only way to really change the sound. Also, if it can help, what are some good-sounding brands of mufflers?

Definitely. Changing just the muffler will make a big difference.

Flowmaster, Cherrybomb, Borla, Magnaflow are all good brands.

Ok, so I'm thinking I'm gonna get a Borla muffler. I need some specs on the 4Runner exhaust, like inlet and outlet diameter, as well as case size and whether it's center/center or center/offset. Where could I find this info?

just wanted to chime in....

I always laugh to myself when people get exhaust just because_____ (fill in the blank). If you are going to upgrade the end of the system (exhaust) wouldnt you want to upgrade the beginning of the system (headers).

Its kind of like getting a super duty butthole and you still have the intestines of a newborn baby. (work with me here).

That sound you are looking for isnt from the exhaust by itself....it is a combo of headers/exhaust. Headers adds that low rumble while the exhaust gives it that loud twang.

My advice.....if your gonna install exhaust...do it right...and install headers to compliment your system.....good luck!!

headers on the V8 , if you could find any, would be a real pita to install. downpipe, cats and just not enough room. but i would get a complete cat back system , not just the muffler, if your going with a borla.

Does someone even make headers for the v8? I was under the impression that they are not available. If you want any performance increase from an exhaust have your muffler shop remove that awful y pipe where the left and right pipes meet.

Although the overall message of that is somewhat correct it is entirely possibly to get a deep low rumble from just a muffler.

i think doug thorley makes the headers....not sure....but that actually sounds like the 4th gen 4runner.....making things to damn complicated for its own good. With all the hindsight I know now, I probably would have bought a truck instead...oh welll...enough of that

yea, i cant believe that y pipe is crimped like that. too bad you cant just buy a replacment, that would be cheaper than a muffler shop. i dont think the offroad one thats available will pass emissions.

Alright, so here's my situation: I have a limited budget (i.e. not enough for a cat-back system). I am choosing to go with a muffler if I can find one to give me the sound I want.

For the record, that whole thing you said about upgrading the exhaust being stupid and how headers are the way to go, yet again, not all of us can afford that. Plus the idea of putting performance headers on a 4Runner that I will have for 10 years and will never be a show car is a really ridiculous idea. I would never put new headers on my 4Runner.

The only reason I would get an exhaust is so it sounds different. Not so that it sounds like a skyjacked hickmobile F250 with 10" pipes but at least make it rumble a little.

How can you start a post with such pompousness and attitude and then be so nice at the end?

My logic is this: I want a low rumbling sound, and that can be achieved by changing the muffler. New headers cost $500+, a muffler costs less than $200. You do the math, and you'll see my logic.

And the part where you told me what to do with my money, judging people does nothing but make you look bad. I don't have a family to care for, and I know how to handle money. I have some extra, and this is what I want to buy with it.
