4th gen leaf sprung SAS

So I am working on collecting all the info to do a SAS with leaf springs. Why leaf's? Well, they are cheap! I don't rock crawl, leaves are very easy to setup and maintain, and will get you about anywhere you want to go. Don't expect me to throw this together overnight, will be several months in the making minimum, but I thought I would share with everyone.

-I am still trying to figure out what axles to use. I originally thought LandCruiser 9.5 but I am not finding any local and I am doing this as cheaply as possible so no buying new built axles either. I have also thought about some Dana 44 or 60 axles out of a pickup as they are much more readily available, but haven't decided on this yet as I have a ton of stuff to pull together still.

-From 3rd gen 4Runner, 1st gen Tacoma sas's and such I have seen everyone using older rig IFS steering box's so that is my plan here.
-Spring perches are readily available to buy cheap, and are also pretty easily made with a little cutting and welding fabrication.

-Older gens had it all figured out for amount and lift but I won't have that. I'm not sure how much lift I would get out of a standard set of leaves but longer shackles (to a point) can provide some lift as well as actually making the mounts lower under the frame to push the leaves lower. I am going for 6" of lift to clear 37-39" tires.

-I plan on running Chevy 63" springs in the rear if the frame length will allow it (haven't measured yet so don't know how long I can use yet) Older gens convert to these and get some crazy articulation with them! :uzi:

-The front springs will only be able to be 43" long max unless I make some bracketry and push the front leaf mount out past the front of the spring. ( I eyeballed wheel center and measured 21-22" of frame to the front.)

-I'm trying to decide what to do with the transfer case. If I use the existing one it will always spin the front end, but with hub lockouts unlocked won't be in 4wd technically. I don't want to spend the money on a Marlin lefty because it is overkill for what I do, but it may be something I have to do. I need to find out if there is an adapter to hook a different TC to the 5spd Auto in my truck and if so I could get a good used one much cheaper.

-Not sure what to do about abs lights and all that yet either. I asked Crozhawk over on Toyota120 what he did and he told me to contact RockSolidToys as they should know or have some idea's. I don't mind losing the abs, wish I could keep it but from as far as I can tell it's not going to happen.

-I also messaged a guy on the TTORA board that has some mad skillz and made a cantilever for his rear axle. He converted to springs and has some crazy long travel droop! He desert races. Here's a link: How to ruin a 2008 4Runner - TTORA Forum

-Whatever axles I find need to have disc brakes. This should give me the stopping power I need as they will most likely be off a ford superduty.

I know there are tons more little things needed, just starting my thought process here, and showing my addiction while I'm at it! Any thoughts, questions, advice, etc is always welcome and encouraged! And if any of you big bad offroad companies want to help a guy out with some sponsoring and such, I'm all for it!!!

Sub'd, this is going to be awesome
I hope so! Need to get everything figured out so I can start collecting parts.
Oh, forgot to add in original post. I am talking to sky mfg to see if they can come up with something too. They've always done good work from what I've seen.

leafs are a good idea considering how functional they are compared to what it takes to set them up. something id think about when picking an axle is where the leaf will sit vs the width of the frame rails, you may end up needing to have outboard leaf mounts

Yes, this is true. I've already planned on stripping any existing mounts of the axles and welding new mounts on too. I need to figure out how wide our axles are now so I can find axles that are 3-5 inches wider too. I think I am it written somewhere, will do some looking around.

I know I'm new, but this sounds really interesting. Ive seen it done on tons of tacomas and 1st-3rd gen 4runners, but very few 4th gens. Sub'd

i want to say our front track width is 61" and the rear is 62" but i maybe wrong. but from what i can remeber about doing research for a full coilover SAS those are the numbers i came up with.

That thread is amazing. I would love to see that thing in person.

Wouldn't leafs up front be an annoyingly harsh ride? I five the Tacomas and similar leaf sprung vehicles to have a notably harsher ride than a coil spring.

you will want to push the front axle as far forward as you can. also, mount the steering box as far forward as possible.

especially if you want to run that big of tires.

depends on the spring pack. my truck rides GREAT, my 4runner not so much. both running leaves, both about the same amount of lift.

Ya I will get some nice soft springs. They don't have to be harsh but older trucks with leaves are made to haul weight and they are rougher riding. I want some long travel, but we'll see.

Make any progression with this?

Somewhat similar to my plans I just got derailed temporarily because of a new family addition.

Was looking into allpro or trail gear tacoma rear leaf springs and either radius arm or 3 link front with 05 ford super duty axles.

My plan was to for the time leave the stock tcase alone (V6 so not fulltime) until I could get around to doing a lefty and twin stick.

I have been trying to figure out the height and frame differences between the 4runner and taco in the rear to see what the difference in lift height would get me.

I'm in the same boat, my baby is due in 2 weeks! Plus we just moved into a new house. I still plan on this, but I was told I have to wait until it isn't my DD... Lol
Definitely long travel springs, front and rear. Probably Deaver, but not sure. Nobody is willing to make a kit, but springs are fairly easy just have to figure out steering.

A lot alike and congrats on the little one they are awesome check out my wagon thread. I have been told I can't do anything until it's not my wife's dd she wants a 5th gen. But we are gonna be moving out of state by the end of the year so everything is really on hold.

I have a buddy building a 1st gen taco that is gonna take a lot of rear frame pics I'm thinking taco rear springs might be the path to take.

Thanks! My 4th, my fiancé 1st. lol
There was a guy that lived down the road, he just moved to Colorado, that had a first gen taco. He converted the rear to 63" chevy springs, bought the long travel ones from deaver, said he could pick the rear tires 48" straight up! Was a bad little toy! He was really admiring my 4Runner, especially after finding out it is a V8, and is thinking of buying one to build up.
