4th Gen Lift Questions

Wheel spacers are frowned upon in the offroading community because it puts a great stress on the studs. I've seen many people use them with no ill effect but for me safety comes first. I'd much rather just get new wheels rather than go cheap.

Depending upon what you decide, I am going to instal Daystar spacers to my Xreas Sport here in LA around the week of June 27th. We could do a wrench-a-thon at the same time at my place.
(I finally have a house with a garage!)
I'm counting on help from several people here and at YT to help out. I also think there was someone else wanting to do a spacer lift so we could incorporate more than one truck - obviously need to share the equipment around.
Just throwing that out there for ya.
PS - Anza Borrego - nice place for offroading - lucky man!

I have decided what I'm going to do with my 4runner. I have done some soul searching and have decided that I'm going to go all out. I got approval from the wife, so I'm good to go. What I'm going with is new suspension all around and getting rid of x-reas. Donahoe coil's in the front and donahoes rear package (spring + reservoir shock) in the hmm... rear.
Yes I know there is no rear solution from Donahoe yet, but I'm willing to wait the 10-12 weeks it will take for it to finish. I've decided to ditch the San Diego shops and just head up to L.A. to get the work done. Most likely at Domello, but I haven't ruled out a wrench-a-thon.

Hopefully this proves to be the best decision. I think 5 years down the road I'll be thankful that I waited the extra time and spent the extra money (not *that* much more when you really look at it).

Good call Jared! It's good to hear that you're doing your homework prior to making any rash purchases and regretting it later on
Btw, if have you considered OME? If you don't plan to do any crazy offroading, this might be a great alternative that is readily available. Just some more food for thought.
Also, you might consider going with their rear shock and coil too since they've done their homework and have something ready. I'm not sure if Donahoe will be making rear coils (I know they're making rear shocks but they might be using OME coils? Not sure - doesn't make sense to dump more $ into making coils since it's not cheap).
Regardless, jump on yotatech and talk to FirstToy. He's done a xreas swap w/ OME on his v6 4runner and he loves it. He did the install himself too btw so you might consider doing the wrenchathon with him. I don't mind helping out of course since removing the xreas will be a blessing (hehe). Time is limited for both of us though but I'm sure we'll be able to find a time somehow.

The SAW/Camburg 2.0" Coilover looks pretty sweet too:

It would be really nice to have the adjustability of the SAW/Camburg or Donahoe front coilovers but I haven't been able to convince myself that it is worth the additional $400 (for the SAW, even more for the Donahoe) over the cost of the OME package.

I have a feeling nobody will want to work w/ the XREAS. Just sounds like liability unfortunately
I'd say try getting a wrenchathon setup. That way you can learn how to do it yourself since it's not that difficult to do. It's also the pride that goes into the work instead of pissing away $$.
Btw, there's are few other guys in the LA area that's looking into a group wrenchathon so that might be fun too! A bunch of 4runners congregating at someone's place to do a mass lift installation. Prob scare the hell outta some neighbors!

I know the feeling, I work on a DARPA Grand Challenge vehicle that is a military Humvee (USMC) retrofitted with all sorts of antennas, lidar, radar, gps, etc, etc.
The neighbors stare REALLY hard whenever it comes out of the garage. Got pulled over by the cops, but they just wanted to know what they hell we were doing with tank-stoppers (obsticles) in the bed. Once we explained they let us go.

i am looking to raise the truck just a couple of inches (2.5 inches up front, 1.5 in the back) to give myself much needed extra clearance in the deep sand of the outer banks. doing a body lift will do little to help me out. i have done a search but cannot find an answer to this question. i understand that spacers are not ideal for off-roading, but since i have xreas, there seems to be few other options.

To answer your question, a "spacer" lift when talked about on this forum is not a body lift. It is a spacer put at the end of the coils to lengthen the suspension. A good picture is here:

I think the going advice would be to get a spacer lift prior to getting a body lift.

Body Lift:
Lifts Body off of Frame to move Body up. Gives appearance of lift but does nothing to the suspension.
Suspension Lift:
Just like the way it sounds. If you need more clearance under your frame, you need a suspension lift. if you need more lift so you can fit larger tires, then add body lift but BL's aren't the safest lift out there (just food for thought).
4th gen max body lift is 1.5" btw unlike previous 4runners where they have 3".

newbie question that i just cant figure out, maybe looking in the wrong places..and my eyes hurt from reading all day today. how can you tell if you got the XREAS. i have and early model 03' sr5. from what i gather the XREAS have a hose attached to the shock, is it on both the front and back or just the front. again i really dont know to much in the off-roading area but very intrested in it, had friends that were into it and got me hooked, now i want to have some fun with my runner...to bad i got it 4x2 but too much $$$$ for insurence.haha. next truck will be 4x4 most def.but for now i have as much fun as i can in a 4x2. any body know of good spots to go in so cal?? legally i mean...

viper4evr2001 - If you've got the SR5, then you definitely don't have the XREAS. XREAS is only standard on the Sport Edition and optional on the Limiteds.
Since you don't have XREAS you actually have more options on how to lift your truck.

sharp4runr - sweet thanks. ya i looked last night to see if i had anything attached to my shocks and i dont so i was hoping that was all it is. and im glad i dont that that system, it seems to limit the t4r a lot, in the aspects of lifting and stuff. but thanks for you input
