Hey Mike, if you haven't installed that lighter piece yet, maybe you can save some dinero and just install a DC power receptacle in your center console storage compartment.
Since I installed one in mine, I never use the OEM one next to the gear shifter. I couldn't stand having a cord or anything sticking out of it, and I like to close that little door over it (I believe that has to be removed for the cig lighter piece to be installed). And I'm not a smoker, so I couldn't care less about having an actual cigarette lighter there.
It was pretty easy to do, but I also had my entire center console out when I installed my head unit and relocated the DAC switch/wiring to the dash, and ran the Ipod cable to the center console storage, and installed some audio/video plugs as well, again for the head unit.

I installed this hard-wired inside my console to keep all the wires nice for my GPS and XM radio. I attached it to the inside wall with Velcro and even left the coiled part of the cord so that I "could" pull it out for ease of use. Power-source is NOT constant on, so all is OFF when the key is out. Sure makes it easy to power cell phones and stuff.

Do you have a picture of what this looks like installed? I'm searching the forums for ways to have both GPS and iPhone plugged in without having cords stretched all over the place. A photo of you solution would be wonderful!

My solution for plugging in my GPS without having cords draped around the shift knob, was to mount the 12v outlet on the passenger side. I bought a quality all weather rubber socket from Marine West for (8?), and flush mounted it on the side. I wanted something that would clean up the interior, and this did a good job. Look all of 30 minutes to tap, splice, drill, and mount.

If you want "hot and cold" power outlets (one on constantly, one on with the key in ACC or ON), do the Constant 12v mod listed above, and buy the 12V-outlet-plus-lighter-kit. The cig lighter is on a different circuit, so it will be the "cold" one.
