4th Gen Mods

Hello fellow 4th gen owners! As you can tell I am quite excited, because after a long search, and many test drives I have finally purchased a 2004 4runner limited, 4Wd with 75k miles. I have been browsing this forum for many months, although I have only been a member for 2 or so. I want to start the mod process right away, but I need some help on lift kits. Being in college, I have money, but not an endless bank account. I was thinking of a toytec lift kit to get me started, but unfortunately I am not familiar with the different types of shocks, and complete lift packages they offer. I was wondering if someone who is more familiar with the process could point out the differences to me between these.This one here 3" FJ Lift w/ front & rear coils or something like BEST SELLER! 3" FJ Lift Kit w/spacers and rear ToyTec coils . Should I be looking at different packages or will one of these do? First of many mods! I appreciate the help that anyone can give me since this is the first time that I have lifted a car, let along owned my own.

To be honest with you there is a very good chance your 10 year old dampers are dying. I would suggest looking at the Bilstein 5100's front & rear. Add a set of rear spring spacers ($25) or toytec superflex's and set the front dampers on the 2.5" position.

Can you explain to me how these work? Sorry, like I said I am not entirely familiar with everything out there.

Basically the front shocks have slots in them depending on where you place the spring bucket dictates the ride height. There are 4 slots. 0", 0.85", 1.75", 2.5" lift. It makes for a cheap easy way to lift your truck. Rear spring spacers are just like they sound. There is a rubber/plastic spacer that is installed between the spring and the vehicle.

As soon as I get everything and get them in I definitely will do. I plan on making a build thread as well, but future builds will be slow. Lol, hopefully not too slow!

RSC -Congrats and you got some work to do. Answer some questions about your wants and become an expert via the interweb. Lift then tires first, no me$$ing around. Save $1600 do the work with your friends - offer beer.

What do you guys think of a spacer mod in the front to level it out and then just adding bigger tires all around? My runner will be used for snow driving, and light off roading.

You would definitely need shocks then. The stock ones wouldn't extend far enough. As for racing, even light racing, personally would have to run a long travel system. Stock suspension only has like maybe 4" of travel. Not very conducive to absorbing much.
