4th Gen Off-Roaders

Living in the Rocky Mountains there are more than a few places to go deep into it. There are a number of off road groups all around to go out with. It's always advised to trail ride in groups in these parts depending where you go as one can, and many have, gotten lost out there. I always have at least some gear and supplies with me.
That being said there is a ton of fun to have. The group I have started trail riding with just did a trip this summer in the east rockies which brings you to a old plane wreckage. It was a 3 day trip. Winch and 33" tires with 9-12" ground clearance recommended for that one...
Plenty of "afternoon" trips to do as well...which range from "green" runs all the way to "your a fool and your rig can't handle that"

T-33 is pretty cool, did you walk to the wreckage? Did you hit other nearby trails - Bunce, Ironclads, MSV/CF? Nice area for sure!

I go off-roading pretty often, I try to go every other week. I've gotten a lot of battle scars so far. I love hitting the trails!

The ONE drawback to the SRP color (maroon) is that it shows every scratch, ding, or chip.

I'm near Boulder, CO and though this is my first year with my 4Runner (or any 4WD) I managed to go out about a dozen times (getting close to my vacation cap at work helped ). I stayed on easy/moderate trails since I was lifted but on highway tires, and I quickly realized the truck is far more capable than me.

The hardest trail I've done - and the one that gave me the most scratches - is called Pennsylvania Gulch, which is blue according to the book but was probably beyond my abilities at the time. There's one not far away called Jenny Creek that is nearly as hard but I like it a lot better since the trees are not as close. I picked up some new tires during the recent Discount Tire sale so hopefully I'll be able to push it further next season.

In my 4th gen, I do a little bit of wheeling here in Colorado. I've only owned it for less than a year, but I haven't done anything too extreme. That being said, mine is in pretty good condition, some scratches from some trees. I would like to find some more trails that I would be pushing it a little more-something more like Moab.

I wheel about as often as I can with 2 kids under the age of 3. Hope to go more when they're older and able to join. Luckily most evidence of the wheeling is limited to the components that are intentionally put in harms way - bumper and skid plates. Although I now have sliders, the gas tank skid is the one that takes the most punishment. Where I wheel the biggest annoyance is all the pin striping. A buddy cut me some custom magnets to protect the sheet metal down the side. I wrapped my plasic with vinyl that has held up surprisingly well, and rigged me some limb risers for the bigger stuff.

im kinda like you, i just got my 4runner about a month ago, and i bought that same book too. looking forward to more wheeling.

Charles' books are good but be aware this ratings are kind of odd. Best thing to do is get out with a local group to learn the ropes.

I originally got my 4Runner with the intentions to do a mild lift/tires and make it a little more capable. Then I realized how capable our 4Runners are and started wheeling and quickly became addicted! Then it all changed to bigger lift bigger tires and continues to grow and probably will for a long time to come!

I live in the northeast so a majority of our trails are tight wooded rocky trail which are awesome! But I am definitely jealous of all the stuff I see out west and plan to take trip out there to wheel and explore one of these days. I've wheeled everything from mild trails to trails that were for straight built rock crawlers and buggies and I love all of it! So after wheeling a little bit of everything I'm building my truck more towards a expedition style built but that still has the capabilities to get thru the tuff stuff if need be, and at the end of the day I still love getting and wheeling some good harder technical stuff from time to time.

i dont really have a lot of pictures of mine actually wheeling. but i do have a ton of my broken crap from wheeling if that counts. The second picture down is my drivers door against the rock wall i slid off of. Oh and theres a picture of my buddies heep coming down the same line i took on a different trail at the same place.

Haha, I did that once! Slippery descent with a large ditch in the middle. I tried to _gently_ cross the ditch, but as soon as my wheel started down it slid all the way in. It was a tense moment!

My 4th gen was purposely purchased for winter snow driving use and off roading in warmer months.

It is full of scratches, rear bumper is hanging on by a thread, the rear resonator keeps being pulled off the hanger,
and the worst damage has been a front axle shaft split in 2, and then also the standard alignment issues from off roading.

A trac works pretty good, draw back is unlike with a locker you need to be at around 2000rpm.
It is big compared to my 1st Gen crawler. Feels less nimble, less able to weave in and out. That's my complaint about it.
Trails I ride are tight northeast trails. So good skids and sliders are a must since often you can't avoid a rock. W
ith the slimmer 1st gen on the same trails often I can avoid with the front tires and climb with the rear.
Or climb with one front, with the 4th you find yourself faced with both rocks right at your front wheels no way to avoid them both.
But it's been a good solid truck, and when it's not the 4wheeler its the tow rig

35" MT, stock gears & V8 power. I wish it had 2wd though.
