For those of you who have the Navi, how does it stack up to todays standards? I usually use my phone but the 2007 that I am looking at has the Navigation option and I am wondering if updates are still provided by Toyota/if it's worth picking it up?

if it hasnt been updated since 07, i would recommend getting the new disk. The only problem is the rest of the headunit to me didnt have enough for me to utilize the rest of my stuff. The navigation itself is pretty good though. I suggest try it out for a week or two then decide if you want to update the disk.

Good to know, thanks! Test driving this week.

These might be a couple of silly questions but is an updated Nav disc (2014) available from the dealer, or is it provided by aftermarket vendors? Are they specific to the year of the vehicle, or universal for all factory nav units? And finally, where's the best/cheapest place to get one and how much do they run?

I have an 08 limited and wouldn't mind updating if it's cheap, but not because I find it lacking. I've been using it for a lot of things all over central and southern Ca since I got my new(ish) whip back in February and so far it hasn't let me down.

well its made by the manuf. of the head unit and sold via toyota. Some dealers do sell online. They're model specific as some use a certain series and others use another series. I'd call local dealer get a quote and either buy from them or look online for that part #. Most can be found on eBay but usually < $100 or should be depending on dealer.

I have an 05 with factory NAV. I actually got a new updated DVD from J.A.'s Toyota 4Runner Highlander and Sport Edition Informational Website for like $20. He was awesome to work with and he made sure I got the right DVD. Everything is working great and has all the updated POIs I was looking for. Plus I just moved to West Palm Beach FL and needed a new disc. This has been great. Check him out and shoot him an email. He has been on this forum for a long time. Good Luck!1

J.A. sells them that cheap?? I know if you go to the dealer, the DVDs are about $200, but I did see some sites that sells them for $150-175. I'd rather an original copy (durability....... it gets used everyday............. I used to burn CDs back in the day and my CDs would sometimes play funny, I never knew why). Does he warranty them? I need an updated DVD pretty soon. Mine is from 2008 I think. On my way to D.C. last week, the NAV's data was wrong (new stretch of highway didn't figure into my route).

EDIT: Are they "burned" DVDs or originals? (I doubt that)

I have a 07 with the Nav and I never actually use it for navigation. Google Maps is so much faster/more reliable IMO. I do, however, use the Nav for street reference i.e. to see when a road I need to turn on is coming up. Bottom line, it looks way better on the dash than the standard issue radio.

Completely agree. Google maps on my phone is 100% better than the stock NAV, but I HATE holding it in my hand and seeing where I'm supposed to go. Plus with police looking for "texters", well, I'd rather look at my built in NAV screen.

Seems like I'm one of the very few who actually like the stock NAV. :(

Ive had the new DVD from JA for about 5 to 6 months with no issues. I mainly use it for street references as I drive but it works great for NAV. I also use my Iphone for Nav sometimes but either one works fine. As far as a warranty on the JA DVD....it was less than $20 so i doubt it. I kept my old disc just in case.

Unfortunately the Nav 4Runner was sold but I just picked up a 2007 V8 Limited (no nav) 4Runner with 70k for $19k out the door. It's in great condition! Picking it up this weekend.

It's $14 vs. $150-200? This seems like it should be a no-brainer. Even if it doesn't end up working for you, you're out $14.

Also, not sure about other years, but I only have to let the nav load the disc once (or each time the battery gets disconnected). So durability shouldn't be an issue and/or standard cds are plenty durable for sitting in a sleeve in the glove box for long periods of time lol.

Yes, you are right. After thinking about it (realize I haven't had any coffee today), replacing it every year is practically free. At that price, you can't go wrong. Durability won't be an issue as you will (should) update the DVD every year.

I hate when the map is wrong (out dated). I hate is more than mayonnaise.
