Driving home from work yesterday evening when a deer ran out in front of me. Swerved to avoid it and ran off in the ditch, lost control, hit 3 pine trees and then rolled onto the drivers side. Vehicle still running, I rolled down the back glass and walked out of the vehicle with minor cuts and an airbag burn.

Good to see you're okay!

For everyone's information: I know it's hard to do anything that's not instinctual but the best thing to do when you're going to hit a large animal is hit the brakes to slow down them moments before impact let off the brakes to raise your nose back up to normal position. That will help keep the deer or whatever from coming through your windshield and keep you on the road.

Again, glad you're okay!

Good advice with the exception of moose. They're tall enough that 1000+ lbs of animal is right at windshield height even in an SUV, so the ditch is usually the better option.
 
Glad to see and hear that a fellow T4R member is ok after an accident like that. At the end of the day, it's just a silly vehicle that can be replaced. Replaced with another one to mod, LOL.

These rigs are safe. Period.

I live in PA, know all about deer. Hate them.
 
I live in the suburbs of St. Louis, and as soon as you get about 50 miles from the city, it turns into boonies until Jefferson City. Out here, I'm about 25-30 miles from the city, and the windy roads already start. Some kid had swerved to avoid a deer in an accord, and flew off into the ditch, and I'm surprised, after seeing this, that yours turned out so bad. The road he did this on is basically on a hill, so on one side the road rises, on the other it drops. Both sides are COVERED with trees. He got really lucky, and even though he flew into the drop-off, he managed to bump a tree on the rear driver's side quarter panel, and happened to land in probably the only area without a tree on the side, which was about the width of his car. I pulled over to help him out, didn't have a strap with me (his car ran, and he spun the wheels, so I assume it would've been possible to drive it for a short distance; i.e. to a safer area), went to grab one to pull him out and save the day. Sadly a cop showed up, and I guess assumed it was my fault, because he started asking me questions. I told him I didn't see anything, and I pulled over to help, and the guy on the side of the road said that, too, but the cop was REALLY reluctant to let me leave. It kind of pissed me off. I was on the side of the road with hazards on and an orange construction light on the roof. I don't have a rear bumper cover on, though, so it could be that. BUT, in the end I left, and decided I will always keep a strap with me.

TL;DR: Kid flew off the drop on a windy road, managed to miss a tree. I wanted to save the day, but didn't have a strap. Cops show up, I leave.

To OP: Glad you're okay. and I understand that Yotas will take about anything you throw at them, but WTF. it still ran?
 
Wow!----glad you are okay man! I had a 2007 SR5 4WD 4Runner that saved our lives as well. The best vehicle. Replaced with a 5th gen...2014. Loving it and will continue to stay with it!

Yeah. I had to crawl back in and shut the motor off after I calmed down. I was thoroughly impressed.
