4th gen shackle

I'm thinking about replacing my back tie downs with some home made shackle brackets. Will the stock bolts give enough holding power, or am I going to have to re-drill and tap (which I would rather not do)?

I'm going to make it similar to the ones shown on www.sonoransteel.com . I wish that I could put these on the front, but I don't see anywhere to put them. I guess that I'll just have to wait for an ARB bumper instead.

I know that I could just buy the hitch mount, which I still probably will, but that's not as much fun and doesn't have as much bling factor.

Use the tow hitch mount as it's stronger.

I've cut into my frame in the back of the truck as it's in the process of a major overhaul and I've taken a look at the bolts on the inner frame of those tow hooks and I was surprised to see how WEAK it was. I'll try to take some photos if I have time this weekend to show you but I will no longer recommend anyone using that tow loop in the back as a viable recovery point. Over time, the two bolts will fail and you'll run into some major issues.

Use the loops only to secure down when your truck is on a flat bed (it's probably only good enough for that much).

Sorry as for the front, scrap the front bumper and either wait for ARB or make one. I have my old one for sale somewhere on yotatech.

I don't wheel a lot right now because it's still mostly a family vehicle. Would they be okay for occassional use if I put grade 8 bolts in? I normally don't get into trouble on purpose, it's usually a spure of the moment thing.

You've already torn off both of your bumpers? I want to see some pics!

it's not a matter of upgrading the bolts to f8. It's the nut on the other end that's not welded well enough. All it took me was a bit of over-torquing the 2 bolts and the nut just came flying off on the inner side of the frame.

good thing I noticed this when I was working out the details on my rear bumper. after this happened I ended up just drilling the holes out and added my own f8.8 bolts

I'd say get the warn hitch shackle as that's one tough piece that'll guarantee performance. Plus it's only 40 bucks or so after shipping so it's not going to hurt your bank roll. Not only that, it's a must have for any entry level offroader.

one time deal. I'm having soo much problems right now it's ugly. I was hoping it was going to be easier building this rear bumper but it's proving to be a great challenge.

not only that, if you want this bumper, you'll have to cut your rear crossmember off so that'll definitely scare away most of the owners.

i do have the demello rear bumper that i had on there (bolt on to stock 4runner - no body lift) that i might sell later on though. we'll see (it's sitting in my garage right now).
