4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Anyone know if 5th gen springs will work on a 4th gen? I know it's a long shot, but FJ springs are getting harder to come by...

I was snooping around craiglist here on the east coast yesterday and found plenty of FJ springs and take off suspension parts. Try Raleigh, NC, Charlotte, Hampton roads, VA, SC cities. plenty there. I'm not sure where you live but it might be worth a shot to look.

Has anyone used bilstein 5100 with stock springs, maxed out at 2.5" in the front? I've been thinking about going this route, and just lifting the rear with spacers..

Opinions on this?

If you've done it, what's your opinion on this route? Pics would be helpful too

I did it with moog coils front + rear and daystar 1.5 rear lift spacers. Traded it in for a 16 land cruiser. Still miss my 4runner though..... :(

Thanks for that!

I'm assuming you did Bilstein 5100 both front and rear then...?

The thing i'm thinking of doing is just the fronts.. Wondering how that would do...

If you can swing it, replace the coils. The moogs arent expensive and the ride will be so much better.

I did 5100 front and rear. Moog coils front and rear. Daystar 1.5 rear lift to be 2.5 front and 2.5 rear. I like the rake that's why I did the Daystar.

4wheel parts have sets of 4 5100 shocks for $325 new. Might as well do the rears as its pretty cheap.

Two questions.

Has anyone here ever moved away from fox or king 2.5s? If so, why?

Where do bp51s and bilstein 8100s fit into the rankings? OR Given how new they are, what will it take data-wise to properly determine that?

Wow didn't know they were that cheap... I kept seeing them for ~$450. Guess i'll be getting springs while I'm at it.

Yea, another member said that the bilsteins can be had for $325. I was looking around $450 so I might be doing the moogs. Any recommendations where to get them from?

Look online. I bought my moog from Wal-Mart online. It was like 55 bucks or something like that. It was super cheap and pretty good overall. More stiff than the xreas but when you lift a 4runner its not supposed to be a soft ride. [emoji14]

Lessons learned from removing XREAS:

1. Get mini tube cutter ($7-$10), no reason to try to save lines if throwing away

2. Brackets in front of rear sway bar link are a PITA, I found it easier to disconnect the lines to get to the bolt.

Why did I read people say Moogs aren't great and prefer to get the OEM FJ coils. any thoughts into why people say this or is it just brand specific and preference for OEM over third party? Thanks

Agree on both points, I did my XREAS delete Sunday. Ended up crushing the lines on the driver side front between the frame and the jack stand anyway, stupid place to put them but made it easier for removal. Would definitely need to cut if they were above crossmember. I didn't cut, just bent when pulled down, not too much trouble but was surprised how much the fronts sprayed hydraulic fluid when I removed first bolts on front shocks. Figured they'd be dry after 12 years of neglect.

After spraying everything with PB blaster for a few days prior thanks to reading this forum, the hardest part of installing new suspension was jacking the truck up (cheap jack) and removing XREAS. Disclaimer though, I bought front coils & shocks assembled from Toyotec. I want to thank you all for tips/comments like this but my bank account is hoping I never return to t4r.org again...

A few months back I thought I'd go with a budget lift hoping I'd get the 4R to sit level and slightly higher. I swapped a full set of used FJ struts and coils along with a Toytec 1/4 inch front spacer. Unfortunately, there is still some slight rake, and the budget lift didn't net me much difference. Although.... I did enjoy the slight difference the suspension made in the crazy nose dives during braking in city traffic.

I am now thinking of getting some 5100's all around. Question is, from reading people's set ups, what else should I expect to order? I will probably re-use the stock FJ springs along with the 5100's, but are spacers (front or rear) necessary to get an even lift? I am looking forward to getting 2-2.5 lift in the front with the rear leveled, will the stock FJ springs be ok?

So I finished my install last weekend. Still need to get bigger tires and will do so as soon as these wear out a little more.
