4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Great info - exactly what I was looking for!

Glad it helped!

If he hasnt already, Ark should write a book and publish it. He has a lot of knowledge.

This is the closest I'll probably get to a published work for various reasons. I will say everything I know was learned from this site and on Toyota120. Most of it stems from what I call suspension ADD, just can't stay happy with one setup so I'm constantly reading/researching various setups.

Been on vacation for the last week and a half, haven't been able to check in/post lately. I'll try to catch all questions, if I miss something it's not intentional.

I've not heard of any ill effects. Technically it does add stress but it really doesn't seem like it's a significant amount. I didn't keep my xreas long enough to comment from personal experience.

.

Thanks for the reply and great information on this thread.
I also hear that I won't gain much for off road use with spacers. How true is that?

I won't be doing crazy rock climbing or anything but would like extra ground clearance for what ever is out there. Will I gain that? Functionaly speaking or is it merely for looks?

I hear that bottoming out is more applicable also.

Thanks again

U won't gain any clearance...spacers mover your wheels out.... I think u are thinking of suspension spacers. Those will add clearance.

Suspension spacers is what I'm referring to. Im considering this > Toyota FJ Cruiser & 4Runner SST Lift Kit: 2003-2012 - 3.0"F/2.0"R once I can save up some money

Yes a spacer lift adds ground clearance. I would recommend the Toytec 3/2 over the ready lift. It'll work just as good and is much cheaper. Toytec also supports the forums and offers members discounts.

Newbie

As the title states please be gentle. Using the rig for some hunting and go out to the property once a month maybe besides hunting season, and there is some difficult terrain, but would like the extra approach and departure angle clearance. So I want to get the ShorockWorks bumper, but now am wondering in regards to lift, how much do I have to input into suspension to counter the weight of this bumper, is it something as simple as body lift/level spacer kit, or can I just do coil overs on the front? As of right now I simply have a stock 2006 SR5.

Any and all input would be great, I just have to take that first step into modding my 4runner, before I'm sure I start investing everything into it.

thanks

The stock suspension will have difficulty handling the weight of a bumper. A spacer lift will add the lost height back, but the added weight will still be a problem. You'll need aftermarket coils to handle the weight properly. Coilovers are best (Icon or Radflo with OW specs is most popular), but if they're not in the budget you can add Bilstein 5100's with aftermarket coils (many choose OME front, Toytec Superflex rear since you're only adding a front bumper at this time).

New Owner/Newbie needing some suspension advice

New owner here, recently picked up an 07 4Runner and I'd like to level the front with the rear.

I did read the suspension FAQ and I'm just needing confirmation if I chose the right parts for what I want.

Again, for now, I'd just like to level the truck. I'd rather use coils than spacers, so I was thinking of getting the OME 883s for the front, leaving the rear coils stock, and going with Blistein 5100 all around. I chose the 5100 over the HDs, in case I choose to scratch that itch and maybe do a higher lift down the road.

What do you guys think?

Sounds good to me. You could just use the adjustment perch on the 5100's to level, but the 883's would be a nice addition. Do you have xreas? If so you'll need to take that into consideration.

Hey guys I'm a first time poster and an owner of a 4runner for only 6 months, anyways I have a question and a problem. I had a local place install a 2.5 level kit, 17" XD Addict wheels with a -12 offset and 265/70/R17 Bfg All Terrain T/A KO's, thing looks phenomenal just I'm having some rubbing issues: I trimmed the fender liners, took off mud flaps, and trimmed the bottom of the bumper slightly, I still get rub while full locked turning and half locked while backing up. Not to mention a constant rubbing sound while driving 75 mph on the interstate (not exactly sure what the case is there yet?), im looking for any ideas how to get the extra clearance to make this setup work??? I'd like to try and keep it cheap since I just paid 2600$ for this and don't have much left spend at the time. Any advice is greatly appreciated and sorry if I come off dumb I'm still a noob when it comes to this thanks

That is strange. I have a 2003 with Daystar spacer lift 275/70/17 and -12 offset wheels and no rubbing at all. The tires are Goodyear Silent Armor and Goodyear is pretty true to stated tire size. My tires are a bit larger than yours with similar lift and wheel spacing and no rubbing. I did trim mudflaps and pushed the fender liners up.
This makes me think what you are hearing is not tire related. Maybe wheel bearing?

Are you seeing any signs of rubbing- on the UCA or on the tires? If it is rubbing at 75 MPH you should see wear on something.

there is still rubbing on the bottom corner of the front bumper and looks like a little where the mud flap use to sit... I was wondering if maybe the fender liner was rubbing due to the wind blowing it back on the tire while doing 75 mph cause I haven't noticed any wear on the tires yet and couldn't really feel anything in the steering wheel just heard the sound ...and theres a small black metal bracket that comes off the main frame that looks like its occasionally rubbing as well... there's no rubbing on the upper control arm

ark_swamp_rider has a great write up on how to correct those issues

I've looked at his thread and it is very useful. Its because of his post that i anticipated some slight rubbing (I think im dealing with a little more than what i thought though) I'm gonna try some of his ideas and trim a little more today and hopefully I can find a cure if not thinking about adding some adjustable coil overs to the front

2005 4Runner Rancho Struts

Perhaps someone out there has run into this problem before. I have a 2005 4runner 2WD v-6 with the stock non XREAs susoension. The probem i am having is that I purchased a set of MOOG 81092 coils for the front, and a pair of Rancho RS5777 for the front. The moog coils are supposedly a direct fit, and the ranchos as well. However, when assembling this set up, I am finding that the Rancho struts are about 1.5" longer inside the coils, and the strut mount fits with a huge gap between the top of the coil and strut mount. Has any one else out there ever run into this problem, and what is the solution? So I have the wrong springs or struts? Am I missing a part?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you may have the wrong part. Is the moog the same length as the stock coils? If it is, post a pic of the assembly, maybe somethings not put together correctly.
