4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Another suspension question

New to the forum and 4 runner world. Have an 04 sr5 v8. Just received the toytec 3/2 bilstein/super flex fixed kit.

First question. The coil overs came assembled. The eyelet on the driver side shock is in line with the top spacer stud. The passenger is about 1/4 off. I haven't disassembled the truck but wanted to know if it's intentionally offset or if I need to get spring compressors to fix it before install.

Second. I read page after page but didn't see specifics. I plan on 285/70/17 dura tracs. What will rub where if any?

Thanks in advance for all your help. There's a wealth of knowledge on here.

I'm pretty sure it is intentionally off.....it's done that way for max clearance between the coil and sway bar. To fit 285/70/17's you have to have either wheel spacers or aftermarket wheels, otherwise they will rub the UCA. I ran this tire on my 03 with 3.5" suspension lift and 1/2" body lift. Most of the rubbing will be on the front. I had to remove the mud flaps, move the front fender liner forward, trim the bumper, and also trim the rear part of the front fenderwell (behind the mud flap). On the rear, I didn't do anything but I did rub the mud flap when flexed out.

It wasn't offset intentionally. I picked up some compressors before tear down so it was a quick fix. The rears shocks from HELL however added another hour to the install before I brought out the sawzall and ended it.

Truck sits great now. Unfortunately when I went for an alignment I got the cam bolts are seized lecture. Is there a way to fix them or should I just go with new lower control arms?

New to forum, but i just completed the daystar 3/2 yesterday and the front in almost 2 inches higher than the front. Replaced shocks with billstein 4600 all the way around. Did I do something wrong?

You can cut them out with a sawzall and replace them. If they are truly seized then they are gonna have to cut them out anyway. I and a couple of others have used the moog tacoma lca bushings and cam bolts. They are much less $ than oem.

I ordered new lca because my bushings and ballpoints were shot anyways.

However I just got a quote for the factory camber bolt kits and they are crazy. I looked at the moog replacement kit. Are those good quality? Are you happy with them? Seems to be the route I'm going to go but would like some feedback.

Yeah I dont have any complaints and i havent seen anyone else say anything negative.

For what you want I would strongly consider a TRD tacoma 4x4 suspension swap. You get bilstein shocks front and rear with tacoma front springs that are a much better ride. This will accomplish the leveled stance and give a MUCH better suspension then you have now. You can keep the rear springs in or you can upgrade them as you see fit. Plus if you buy the fronts already assembled it's a pretty easy process to replace them.

I'm new to this whole world so pardon my ignorance. I have a 2006 v8 sport with xreas. Can I do the above mentioned swap (tacoma front and rear bilstein shocks and front springs) and keep the xreas or will the xreas be swapped out? about how much lift do you get with this swap? Does it eliminate or reduce the rake that it has on stock 4runner suspension? Thanks.

Yes, you can do it but it completely replaces xreas. You should get 1 to 1.5" of lift in the front and nothing in the rear. That should equate to a "leveled" look with little to no rake.

Do you mean the front is 2 inches higher than the rear? If so, something is definitely off. Did you swap out any other parts besides the shocks and spacers? Can you post pictures of the shocks/coils?

Rear upper and Lower links.

If i was looking at installing Metal Tech upper and lower rear links to re allighn my drive shaft angles how do i adjust to make everything true and the way it is supposed to be.

I have a 2003 V8 limited 4 runner that i just recently installed the Toytec Ultimate lift. LR UCA and spidertrax wheel spacers on and have a small vibration in rear drive shaft around 15-30km then it disappears completly. I have already replaced my U joints and i know for sure my tires are in good balance. I have heard the uppers are the ones that can fix this but am unsure of how much to adjust.

Thanks for any helpfull advice in advance.

Installed my 2013 FJ Shocks/Springs along w/ the Daystar 2.5/1.5 Kit today and I feel like I'm pushing my limit w/ the stock Arms..

What's everyone upgrade to?

Light racing are the most popular, mostly due to price. However, several have had issues with them (I run them and haven't had issues). Camburg and Desert Racing get good review for a little more money.

6inch lift for T4R's

Just wanted to let some people know, I spoke with the guys at fabtech, they are in the process of getting a 6 inch lift for the 4th gens made up, they didn't give me a date of when though, just said they are going to be making one... maybe if enough people harass them they will get on it sooner.

Awesome, thanks for the info. There are a couple folks here running 6" bracket lifts for the FJ Cruiser on their 4runner, can't recall which brand though.

anyone know if you could run 255/80/17 without a lift? i have 255/70/18's right know without lift and was just wondering if anyone has tried to get them to fit

Nope. Not going to fit without lift and trimming. 255-75-17 = 32.1" (BFG KM1), 255-80-17 = 33.3"(BFG KM2). The cooper ST Maxx is a tad smaller in a 255-80-17 @ 32.8"

Looking for some advice,

I keep going back on various options but in the end I've decided all I would like to do is get rid of my current suspension (XREAS) and replace it while keeping my ride stock height (I have a 2WD so no 4 wheeling for me). I would however like to level the front to make it look better. My question is, what is the best option for me? My current coils have 95k miles on them, should I replace them when I replace the shocks or will it not make any difference in the ride? I've read up on Bilstein 5100's but if I am keeping my stock height and not going to be wheeling, wont these be too stiff of a ride? I want to keep the comfortable stock feel. Would it make more sense to go with Bilstein 4600's and throw a 1" spacer up front?

Thanks in advance!
