4th Gen: Toytec Ultimate 3" vs. OME vs. Overland Warehouse

Hey all,

So I was wondering if anyone could offer their advice as to which set up would work best for my needs. I'm leaning towards the Toytec at this point due to reviews/cost. Link to Toytec:
FJ Cruiser/4Runner Ultimate 3" lift package - Toytec Lifts: Toyota Lift Kits: FJ Cruiser Lift Kits, Tacoma Lift Kits, Tundra Lift Kits, 4 Runner Lift Kits, Sequoia Lift Kits, Toyota Truck Lift Kits

Current setup:
XREAS with 161K on it, no leaks though. I'm feeling like its time to do a full suspension swap, no spacer lifts.

My needs/wants:
-Price: Would like to stay around $1000 (suspension, independent of tires)
-Not planning on adding an steel bumpers any time in the near future (or maybe ever) but would be nice to know if all 3 are capable of supporting them
-Want something that I can use on some regular mountainous trails (Georgia trials)
-Want some good lift so I can put on 275s (or higher maybe).

I have heard great things about all 3 of these setups. Overland is purpose built but too expensive at this point (just getting ready to graduate from college and I think its priced between $1400 and $2000 depending on whether you get the 2.0 or 2.5). I've heard OME is fantastic but rides rough (at least with the 2.5, also around $1000 I think). Toytec seems like a great choice all around and I've read a lot of people enjoy the Bilsteins.

Any negatives/positives besides what I have already mentioned or just general advice is appreciated.

Well, just FYI, OME will sag if you did ever decide to add stuff, and I've ridden with guys who have OME and I always thought it was bouncy, not "rough" (I kinda like bouncy). And you can get the OME at Toytec for like $800 and Toytec 3" is like $300 more.
If you want to stay near $1k, get the Toytec or OME. Both can fit 285s with some spidertrax.

The 5100's have an adjustable spring perch that'll go up to +2.5" plus the 0.5" from the FJ coils, you'll be at +3.0" in the front, but will need spacers in the rear. I'm not sure about the largest tire size though.
 
I had a toytec 3" spacer and just switched to OW 2.5" and LOVE it! I was going to switch to the Ultimate but decided to do the OW because the 2.5" will hold the front bumper I'm going to get a little better than the Ultimate. These 2.5s are HEAVY DUTY!! If you want more insight on the OW check out toyota120.com.

That might work well for me. I think its the cheapest solution too, besides a spacer lift. So if I'm at the .85 setting, that should take me to 3" right?
-How large of a spacer do I need for the rear though and will it mess up the suspension geometry?
-How do they compare to Toytec/OME in terms of offroad capability?

I've heard they ride great too! :)

Without that bumper though, how bad is the ride. From what I've read when they are unloaded, its stiff like the back of a pickup truck. Yeah, I've read about the OW and they sound amazing however the price is a big issue. The Toytec won't hold a bumper well? Interesting, I would have thought they would.
 
the 5100s + FJ coils + rear 1.5 spacer would give u about 3/2 lift, (not every one gets exactly the same amount tho) depending on how much u pay for the coils, a cost guess of 550-625. if u want it slightly firmmer, get the OME coils instead of the fj, but that will most likely raise the cost even more. either of these setups will perform just fine offroad but imo, if ur ever gonna get a steel bumper, the OME coils would be the better choice.

Our coilovers will indeed hold extra weight from a bumper/winch combo. IMO, you can't go wrong with any of these. One thing that the OW and the Ultimate kit have over the OME is that they come assembled so there is no need to for a spring compressor or to reuse your stock top plates like you would with the OME. However the OME is a few hundred less so it really does depends on your budget too.

I just installed the OW 2.0 kit on my 4Runner and it rides very nice for a lifted SUV! I do not plan on putting any heavy duty bumpers on my 4Runner, so the OW 2.0 kit worked perfectly for me. It is a bit more expensive than the Toytec Ultimate lift, but I think it is worth the price for the quality of the suspension.

Sorry to hijack OP's question

I know the OME's will sag if extra weight is added to the front... but how much weight will the toytec coilovers withstand without apparent negative effects?

Wait...why did you have to get either a spacer or new wheels??? was there something wrong with the 3" ultimate kit and a stock setup that would require them?

I am looking to do the 3" Ultimate toytech and I have a 03 V8 Sport stock...I though it came with everything I would need.

I would agree that the "light" OME's will sag, but the "mediums" handle an additional 70-180lbs. and the "heavies" handle 230+lbs. and should be fine, but they deliver a harsh ride without that extra weight.

I'm also curious about the Toytec's capacity. If you crank up the coil-overs to accommodate additional weight, you're adjusting the pre-load, but what does it do to travel, ride quality, etc.? The spring-rate of their coils would tell us a lot in comparison to others. It seems pretty tough to get it all setup just right unless you know all of your additional weights and do it all at once.
