For anyone having problems with your transfer case (engaging/disengaging), check the fluid level. If your lucky it might be an easy fix.
After a dealer service I was having a lot of problems engaging/disengaging 4WD and when it engaged there was with a loud "thud." At over 90K (and more than its share of abuse) I though my 4Runner might be just showing signs of aging. But I checked the t-case fluid level, and about a cup of oil came out the fill hole! After draining the excess oil shifting 2WD-4WD-4Lo worked flawlessly.
I be honest, I am little confused at how the dealer could fill the t-case above the fill hole.
