4th gen V6 > 5th gen V6

I had to open up the hood to make sure my new 5th gen T4R didn't have an I4! I swear the old engine in our 2003 felt stronger, was quieter and averaged 21-22 mpg (compared to 18). I'm not looking forward to pulling my boat with the 2011 (which my 03 did perfectly fine).

Am I the only one that is completely underwhelmed by the new engine? Other than that, I absolutely love the redesign.

I know this sounds like I am complaining but I am seriously wondering if I am imagining this or others notice the difference too.

Well, it does sound like it, because you are, but it is allowed.

Personally I think you are imagining it, if you get on this V6 this thing really moves! Curious if someone would dig up and compare some 0-60 times for your old one vs the 5th gen. I came from a 5.9L v8 and I am happy. I have yet to pass anyone and wish I had my old v8. Sure, I think a lot of people want the v8, me included, but I know this v6 is a great 'little' engine. I drove an 06' and 07' with the v6 before buying the 5th, those felt 'weak'.

You have to give the engine some time (at least a few thousand miles) to break in. My engine is much more responsive and powerful after break in. Besides sounding like a tractor at idle, its my favorite gas 6 cylinder toyota engine.

My beast didn't really come alive until 1000 miles or so. It's now averaging about 20-21 mpg, takes off when I need it too, and has done a great job. I'm very pleased with it. Just give it time to break in. When I want a quick burst, I just downshft into sport mode and run thru the gears myself. A racecar, it's not, but it will pull a small building off a foundation. lol
 
My two cents.....

I test drove one for the first time and wasn't "wowed" I thought it moved okay but thought there should have been a bit more power behind it. I then test drove some comparable Nissans and felt the same. I test drove the 4runner a second time and ran through the gears manually and it was a different truck. Not sure how bad that killed the gas mileage though.....

Hopefully will be purchasing one soon.
 
I really think the difference is in the throttle response (which was probably done for emissions or mpg goals). If you shift manually or really "get on it" and force it to downshift it's pretty darn quick.
 
Yah, my first test drive left me disappointed - it felt sluggish, especially compared to my PF, which has a sock-o V6, but it must be tuned for torque lower down the curve.

It (4R) also felt more sluggish than a Pilot, but I can only assume it's tuned for mpg. I will say this; when you get on it, it goes good.

Must be the VVT, 'cause up there between 3500-4000 rpm something sweet kicks in.

Would I have bought a V8? .... hellya .... but neither am I disappointed in this V6.
 
I own a tacoma with the old 4.0 and regularly drive hofs05's new 4runner and the new engine is a step up. If anything as said before throttle response may be tuned for better mpg, but when you get on it there is a noticable difference.

Just hit 5000 miles and the engine is starting to feel like it's got a b@ll sack finally.........I'm with you though, it's not very torquey (spelling) and it saddens me greatly that a V8 option wasn't available. I'd encourage you to drive it like you stole it, it's more rewarding.

Cross your fingers for TRD to make a supercharger one day (wishful thinking) :redbrick:

I really wanted to update to a 5th gen and will not for this reason. My 4th gen is a V8 but I have driven 4th gen V6s and they did feel livlier and less rough sounding than the 5th gen.
 
I agree with others. I have about 8k on mine and its feeling stronger every day. Also, it does seem faster in S mode. Tranny shifts quicker. Definitly hits a sweet spot at 3800+ r's. But I do feel your pain as i came from the almighty 5.7 haha.
 
Throttle tuning is the difference. The 4th gen was designed in the days of cheap and easy gas. Everyone drove like they stole it*. The 5th gen has a lazy throttle, but if you actually put your foot all the way down, it is shockingly quick. Everyone I work with that has the old V6 (i.e. they commute the same roads) is getting around 18mpg with the winter gas. I'm still up over 20mpg with this **** winter gas. I regularly see 23mpg with summer gas.

* Speaking of stolen, my father in law's 98 Tacoma was stolen last week. My dad is going to buy it from him as a farm truck so I was over there checking it out to see about the damage from the police chase that ensued. The throttle is basically binary... on or off. Being used to my 4Runner, it kind of startled me. Trust me, his 2.7L, 4AT Tacoma isn't faster than my T4R even with the touchy throttle.
 
Does anyone have a link to performance numbers? I'm wondering what the 0-60 time is for the 4th gen V6 versus the 5th gen.

That should give us a way to tell if it's the extra weight or if it's just the throttle tuning.
 
I test drove a 2011 last week and thought the engine was noisy, unresponsive and felt unrefined. It seemed to take alot of pedal action to keep things moving in traffic. On a more positive note, it did feel great when I floored it, good power wide open, also it only had 18 miles on it so probably would loosen up over time. Liked the vehicle very much otherwise but probably won't buy one due to the engine. Guess I'm spoiled by my V-8 Tundra.

4th gen v6=
0-60= 8.1
1/4 mile= 16.5

(4th gen 0-60 times? - YotaTech Forums) (times came from automsn)

2010 4runner v6=
0-60= 7.8
1/4= 15.9

(you kind find the 5th gen numbers anywhere, just google it, all over major publications)


Disclaimer: If anyone is gonna yell at me saying my numbers are wrong, I don't really care (my truck crawls off road, it doesn't race vin diesel), this was only after 10 mins of searching, and most performance numbers from major publications for the 4th gen were the v8.
