Depends on if it's a VVT-i V8 on the 2005-09 or the earlier non VVT-i V8 on the 2003-04.
But IIRC, the non VVT-i V8 wasn't that much faster in 0-60 over the 4th gen V6.
To answer your question, I'd give the nod to the 4th gen V8. The HP increase in the 5th gen V6 is loss to the 500lbs in extra pork. Besides the old saying goes, "HP sells cars, torque wins races."

Don't forget that the 5th gen is also 300-500 lbs heavier than a 4th gen....

I only saw 5th gen on the road once :[ I did test drove it earlier this month, not that much torque but definitely faster than my v6

4th gen V6 and V8s were nearly neck and neck at the finish in the 1/4 mile but the lowend grunt of the V8 got it to the first 60' quicker but the V6 winds up faster and made up a little ground by the end of the strip in a couple tests floating around back 5 years ago so with the 5th gen gearing could help it make up for the extra heft.

4th gen V8 (especially with VVt-i) would win, no question in my mind.
I am pretty sure I can “smoke” the 5gen even with my lift and AT tires.

I use one of my 2 sports car if I want to go fast. The 4R is for towing and reasonable space. I can honestly say, I have never felt the need to try and race my 4runner.
I will say though, a friend drove his '05 V8 4Runner around New Jersey Motorsports Park, and he had a good laugh. He was trying to dry the track off (with the tow vehicle) so he could get the race car back out there.

Using weight and hp numbers a 1/4 mile run for a 2010 4Runner would be somewhere in the high 15s or low 16s which is a few ticks slower than either the V6 or V8 4th gens. 4th gen would win unless the driver sucks.
Mike,go to Bandi and get some real numbers (which will be about a second slower up at 5800ft) and we can go from there since on the street there's too many variables plus the danger factor is greatly increased.
