4th Generation MODS...

This website is awesome. Everyone seems so helpful.

I just got my first 4runner last week. I love it. 2005 SR5/4x4, Titanium Metallic. Anyway, I want to put some MODS on it, but don't know where to start. I was interested in a lift kit and bigger tires, but I don't know if that is where to start.

I am curious if you had to start from scratch, where would you start? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!!!

BTW, I had a 2000 Xterra that I loved, and I hope the 4runner can live up to it. So far it has!!!

Great color !!! (Mine is also Titanium... )

As for modes it depends what are You planning to use your 4Runner for... If You go offroading You probably should look for new tires and lift. If You use it only for everyday driving and You like little gadgets there is many great toys that You can add to it. Probably the only thing that can limit You with mods is $$$$$.......

Congratulations! You'll love the color -- easy to keep clean.

As far as mods go, I'd suggest you scan the forum a bit and start making your list. The rear differential breather mod is an easy way to start.

My 1st mod was getting the windows tinted - a must down here! Then I did the reflector mod to put those little reflectors on the lower corner of the back bumper to use. Easy and cheap mod if you print out the direction from this site. And then and then........... But those were the 1st 2 I did.

Well, I have several things that I love, but if I had to pull something out of thin air to start with I'd say the all-weather mats. Especially since it is winter right now.

I really want a lift kit and bigger tires, but after reading about gas mileage etc...I am not sure. I got 26.5 mpg back from the beach last weekend. I don't know if I want to give that up.

I am getting my new alpine head unit, speakers, and sub installed this weekend, which my wife wasn't too happy about...

I already purchased the rubber floor mats, those things sure were nice when the snow was melting last week (it is now 75 here...)

I also found the thread about the brush guard interesting where it was $1000 of damage for a minor accident. I might go that route...

anyway ... as far as lift and bigger tires, it really just depends on tire size as to how much of a hit it takes on your MPGs.

I started with the hood protector mod! I believe they are down to about $76 nowadays......was $109 back in mid-May '04. It is a easy mod to install, looks nice, and does an ok job keep the bugs off windshield. A chrome exhaust tip accessory is another cheap and easy to install mod also. Some of the peeps in here have done some very nice mods both inside/outside of thier 4runners. I am always looking in here to gain knowledge about how I could use thier mods for my future improvements to my runner. Also, expect more aftermarket mods to become available as the '05 Tacoma use a lot of the 4 runner's style and engine specs!

I am going by the display in the car. I am assuming that is right. After adding all city miles after the 157 from the beach, I am now at 21.7 mpg with about 90 miles left in the tank. Should I assume that the on board displays are not correct?

I believe it has been confirmed that the display is 1-2 mpg more generous than it should be. You did not mention which engine you have. My V8 never gets more than 17.x mpg (calculated) The display typically reads something close to 19mpg.
