I just picked up this 1st gen 4runner. Been looking at them for about a year and finally made the move. Nice old truck with a new 22re motor. I have lots of plans for this truck so i appreciate your help. I have a turbo tacoma and I plan on putting a turbo on the 4runner and getting maybe 150hp. I don't know much about 22re but I'm about to learn. If there are meets around Austin, San Antonio, or Houston, I am down. :thumb3:

What about a 2jz swap with stock trans? Has this been done?

With a stock trans? I doubt it. If anyone has tried, it didn't last long.

Why boost the 22RE? You can get the same HP with a 3RZ swap for about the same price, and be more reliable. And if you have to have boost, the 3RZ has much more potential than the 22RE.

I have spare turbo parts laying all over my garage. And I can get it done for cheap. What does the 3rz come out of? Is that a v6 or 4?

3RZ is a 2.7l 4cylinder from 96-02ish Tacomas and 4Runners, the successor to the 22RE. 150hp or thereabouts stock, but it's really popular with the guys that drag their Tacos. I've seen guys on customtacos.com claim to have over 800hp on 2RZ or 3RZ blocks.

I'm in the middle of swapping a 3RZ into my '85 right now, and I'm thinking a turbocharger might come next year, so it's kinda on my brain. Sorry to have questioned your build plans. Nice truck, and welcome to the forum!

Na we cool. Thanks for info. Im gonna look into that. I just know this truck would be a lot more fun with 200 or a little more horses. I bet this truck is putting down about 60 or 70 to the tire.. It's rediculous.hah.
