4WD engaging problems

Just purchased my 97 4Runner Limited 4x4. The 4WD worked the first time I used it, the 4WD indicator light went on and I can feel the difference in steering and traction. Since then, when I push the button for HI-4, I don't get the 4WD indicator light and the 4WD doesn't seem to work, I can hear the engagement in the transfer case but no 4WD. I also tried 4-LO, I can feel the torque but still no 4WD indicator light and 4WD. I have searched around the forum and couldn't find a definite answer or solution to my problem. BTW: My 4Runner didn't come with a owners manual, and I just ordered the Haynes repair manual, so hopefully that might be of some help. So any information at all would be of great help. Thanks.

i had the same problem in my 02 when i first got it, i took it by the dealer ship multiple times with the same answer "could not duplicate the problem" i never found out what was wrong with it, but eventually it just started working again, there was a post about a sensor somewhere, and you might want to check that out, i believe it was on a 4th gen though.... good luck, and if you figure it out let me know!

Finally fixed my 4WD engagement issue. I have had a 4WD engaging problem ever since I purchased my T4R Limited last week. I would push the Hi-4 button and I could hear the engagement in the transfer case but the 4WD indicator light wouldn't illuminate and I would still be in 2WD. I finally got it to engage and to illuminate the 4WD indicator light. All I did was reverse my car and push the Hi-4 button, then I heard a "clunk" and the 4WD indicator light went on and the 4WD was working. Now it engages and illuminates the light everytime. I hope this helps anyone whose havings a 4WD engagement problem.

With the RR DIFF LOCK issue. It wasn't an issue to begin with. I didn't know you had to be in Lo-4 to have it working. So instead I did the safety bypass which would allow me to engage the locker in any drive (2WD, Hi-4, and Lo-4). All the credit goes to Phong.
