4wd button not working

So i recently sold my Taco and purchased a 02 4runner, but i have an issue. The 4wd button on the shifter is not working. Not only is it not working but it has no wires coming to or from it. I saw 2 small black wires under the boot but they were connected to two other black wires going into the dash. Should those wires be connected to the button? Anyone have any pics of what it should like? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

you got any lights on the dash or switches added to the knock out panel?

possibly a variation of the andy mod?

if you wire it wrong this can happen, quote from thread i linked to:
just wanted to report back that this mod has worked flawlessly for, went on a run to test it out. I forgot you cant engage 4x4 when the vsc switch is on....truck already thinks its in 4x4 so it wont engage it haha. I personally like it much better then the andy mod, so just a bump for beto putting in so much time and effort to get this working. and hopefully it will be useful to others as well.

short of someone messing with the wiring i would check the actuators on the t-case fairly common on the later models. 01-02.

thread on it if you want to get deeper into it.

if you are suspecting a switch throw a volt meter on it, and check the switch is acting correctly with the right amount of current going through it and if pressed you see a change in the current. don't know the volts off the top of my head and im not going to guess as that could screw you up. give it a search if you think it's the switch.

So upon pulling the lower dash apart, apparently instead of buying a new shifter with a button and harness, he extended the wires to a switch on the left side of the dash to turn 4wd on and off. Guess i'll be browsing the classifieds for a shifter with the wires connected to the button. If anyone has one please let me know....it's for an automatic. Thanks

There should be a center diff lock switch to the left of the dash, shows 4 tires with an x in the middle. Did the PO somehpow wire it so all he had to do was hit the center lock and it would go into 4hi center locked?
