4wd engaging problem.

Probably not used often enough. Try following the procedure under the driver's sunshade (if blinking, stop, reverse, forward). In addition if that doesn't work, I found while driving slowly (say under 20 or so) engage 4wd button then make a right turn, goofy but it worked for mine. Then after some time with repeated use the system works smoothly each time. Try changing diff and tc fluids too. Luck. :cowboy:

^^^ Pretty much hit the high points - how often is it used/ engaged and how old is the fluid? I have tried to engage mine at least once a month just to ensure it works and keep it moving. The fluid is important because if that stuff is old it will not work like it should and it is not good for the diff.
mine had the same symptoms as yours. I never knew if it would engage or not. Finally changed the diff fluid, TC fluid, and rear diff fluid. Didnt change anything. after several months it would NOT go in to 4wd. I had to change the ADD on the front diff. Costly little rascal but it immediately corrected my problem and after about 9 months it is still working fine. Be advised that the 01 and 02 are electric not vacume
All fluids changed within 500 miles. I originally was having problems with it being hesitant going into 4wd. Pulled sensors and cleaned with electronic cleaner. After that it's been acting up.

Are you talking about trouble getting into 4hi or 4lo? What kind of transfer case do you have?
Multi mode transfer case. It's weird once I engage it indicator light flashes but will not engage no matter if I try all the tricks. Now if I turn the truck off then back on it's right in 4hi with center diff locked. Then I press the center diff button and it disengage center diff as it should. Seems as something is out of sync
Just a p0440 which has been for a bit. Have it narrowed down to canister but not to worried about replacing it yet
What was the cost on that.

not cheap but I tried EVERYTHING before I finally bought the actuator. I had pulled ALL the sensors on the trans and TC and cleaned them. checked electrical path. on and on!!!!.
I even checked the electrical pinout on the ADD and it checked OK!!. But with talking to a fella from Michigan (on this forum and I8mud) who had been down this road and assured me that he was correct that the ADD was bad.....I got a new ADD actuator and so far it works great. (been 9 months now) I didnt have the money to waste on a $300 part so I checked EVERYTHING prior to ordering the part. wish I would have just got it and been done .....but I HAD to make sure it wasnt something else. the part is pricy but it cured my problem. Exact same symptom you are experiencing. good luck

Do you have an FSM to chase this down with?
I found this under "Shift from 2WD (H) to 4WD (H) impossible":
List of possibilities to check in this order -
1. 4WD fuse
2. Wire harness
3. Vehicle speed sensor
4. 4WD position switch
5. 4WD indicator light
6. Actuator assembly
7. A.D.D. control system
8. 4WD control ECU
9. Transfer assembly
Have a buddy in service department at Toyota guess it would be easier to take a day off and drop it off with him so he can diagnose the issue. Just hate not able to figure this out my self. Small problem to have but regardless it's still a problem
Tried that as well. I think it has something to do with accuator position. It's not having a hard time getting into 4wd it's just it's not getting there without me have to turn ignition off then on again. And since when it come on the center diff is already lock that is what leads me to believe that. But I have no idea how that could have happened *
