4wd indicator - 96 5spd

Searched and found very little on this.

Im getting 4hi and 4lo no problem but no indicator on the cluster. Not a huge deal but i’d like it to work. Pulled the cluster out again and swapped the bulb but still no dice.
E-locker indicator next door works just fine as well.

Checked the vac lines that i had access to and everything looks fine so im guessing its gotta be the switch or wiring? You can hear the switch when shifting in and out so im a little stumped.

Can anyone confirm before i buy a switch?
Anything im missing here?

TIA

I just swapped out my 5 speed transfer case. Here's the switches on either side of the shifter. You can disconnect the 2 blue plugs and verify they work checking continuity with a meter. Unlikely both would fail at same time. Here's a diagram, maybe this will help.
My 4x4 indicator light doesn't work because I have an 2000 auto cluster chip in a 99 5 speed which makes a change in operation. I could rewire, I just haven't gotten around to it. I have the wiring diagram to tackle it if I get the extra time, which I never seem to get.

Since you are hearing the ADD relay (passenger footwell) click, the transfer case switch is working. If the truck is going into 4WD, the ADD actuator is working. All that is left (since you changed the bulb) is the ADD indicator switch on the front diff and its wiring. Remove, inspect and replace as necessary...

Confirmed 4hi and lo work just fine, ordered the switch as wiring looks fine from what i can tell. Will report back once installed.

Swapped in the new switch on the front diff but still no dash light... bah

Did you any any point swap out the cluster or cluster motherboard? Same thing happened with me when I swapped out my cluster motherboard from an auto into my 5 speed.

I personally did not but there is no telling what happened before i got it :sobbing:

guess i'm going to try testing for signal on the switch in hopes that i'll determine if its wiring or something else. obviously not a huge deal as everything works just fine aside from the indicator.

Did the 4wd indicator lite work ever while you owned it? If it did, that would rule out the auto motherboard thing I mentioned.
I might have my old motherboard laying around somewhere and can maybe find the diff between manual and auto markings or appearance...and also re-verify that the lite does work with that one. The only reason I swapped it out with the auto one, is my gas gauge wasn't working because of it. I also have a 5 speed parts rig I could pull the cluster to verify the lights work with that one. Like on yours, on mine everything is fine except the indicator light, not a biggie, but it be nice to get working again.

no, it hasn't worked since i've had it.
Could definitely be some PO tampering and that wouldn't surprise me at all. I did find a couple 6 or 8 pin connectors in the dash connected to nothing which makes you wonder a little and the aftermarket alarm system is spliced into everything. Haven't decided to tackle getting that out just yet because its currently working and i dont want to immobilize the truck. Need to get a diagram for the factory ignition harness first. :faint:
I'm going to see if im getting any signal from the switch and if so i'll know its wiring in between, if no signal, back to the drawing board.
LMK if you find anything out with your parts rig

There are a few unused plugs behind the dash - one for the locker switch (even my 2WD had it...), one for the mirror control switch (matches the one on the door...), etc.

There isn't much left in the system. The Green-Red wire comes from the 4WD switch on the transfer case (grounded when in 4WD), goes to the ADD position switch, which shorts when ADD is engaged, to the gauge cluster, ECU, ABS computer and dash light (Green-Black wire).

The gauge cluster has a second green-black wire that is turn signal related and the ECU has a second green-black wire that is 5V power for some engine sensors, so be careful. :)

Interesting, i have the elocker and clutch start/stop but there are 2 others, mirror motor makes sense but maybe ect or something to do with auto trans as i dont have either of those.
I'll have to look into the wiring when i have some time, thank you for the specifics i think that will help tremendously!

These are circuit confirming points on diagram.

ok now we might be on to something^

Didn't realize it was tied into ABS.
ABS was down for the first month of driving it then i got it working but it would grab randomly in light braking so i pulled the fuse until i had time to really look into it. That is probably my culprit

Yeah, you can see that also ties into the ADD on the bottom right of diagram, I didn't highlight that one.

The '99 setup is a bit different than the 96-98 setup, but it covers it fairly well. Some wire colors and connectors changed.

That connection to the ABS, ECU and Locker computer are all just 'signals' to change their operation. Even if the ABS wasn't working, it wouldn't affect the dash light.
