4WD Indicator?

I have a '97 4Runner with a manual transmission. I'm just wondering if there's suppose to be any kind of indicator light when I have the truck in 4WD?

This vehicle is new to me so I don't know. There does not appear to be light or anything unless something is burned out?

Anybody know?

Yes, there is a 4WD indicator. It is a green symbol that shows the center diff, the drive shafts, and all four wheels. As for what is keeping you from getting into 4WD, I have no idea. Have you tried driving forward and in reverse to engage the 4WD? Does 4-Lo work?

The 4WD is engaging but I don't see any indicator. I do hear an audible click.

Where is the green indicator light... dash panel... elsewhere??

The indicator is on the right side of the dash panel, just to the right of your fuel level gauge. How can you tell that the 4wd is engaged?

Here's a photo my dash panel. When I engage/dis-engage the lever (photo below), I hear a click. 4WD apparently engages/dis-engages likewise, but I don't see any light anywhere to indicate when 4WD is engaged.

If you care that much then replace the light for it in the dash, but i would rather not have it on, i hate warning lights on the dash.

it is in the fuel gage pod. and you need to buy some Armour-all...

Yes there is a light for it, shine a flashlight around the dash area and you should be able to see the outline of the icon of what were saying.

it is in the bottom left hand corner under the gas gage that is where mine is in my 1996

Remember, two things have to happen for 4WD to engage on your truck (more on other models). One, the TC has to engage the front drive shaft in 4H or 4L. Two, the ADD system has to engage the front differential to the front wheels. The light only comes on if BOTH happen, and #2 only happens after #1 happens. To be sure you are in 4WD, do you feel the tightness in a slow turn on asphalt? If so, and no light, then sending indicator switch on front diff is your probable culprit. If no 4wd, then problem can be in ADD or TC. Lots of posts on troubleshooting this if you search. But first be sure if you have 4WD or not--don't rely on a 'click'.
