I bought a black 02 T4r limited 4wd last summer with 92k miles and have loved it. It's been super reliable and a really fun drive. Im now running into my first issue - or at least I think I am but it could just be user error..
As you guys know the 02 has two gear shifters. the "small shifter" on the left with H-N-L and the bigger one wit P-N-D etc. I drive normally in 2wd-L as the manual recommends. To put the truck into 4wd I just press the button on the side of the "small shifter" and normally the light on the dash starts blinking and then it shifts into 4wd. I havent used the 4wd a lot (or as much as I'd like to) but have had no issues before shifting in and out. It definintely made a noise and you could feel the shift but thats it.
Yesterday I wanted to go into 4wd as we've had some snow. I pulled out of the lot at work and pressed the button going about 15 mph. The light started blinking but there was a rumbling/grinding noise and no shift. i kept driving like that thinking it would shift but the light kept blinking and my rpms just went up as i drove w/o shifting. i pulled off the road into a parking lot to try and sort it out. i clicked the 4wd button again to go back to 2wd and it still was making weird noises. I put it in reverse and it shifted back to 2wd finally. I checked the 4wd again and it made weird noises again and was jerky as i drove. it seemed like the 4wd was engaged but i never heard or felt the shift. I got it back into 2wd and went home.
This morning I tried again to put it in 4wd as we have snow on hte ground. It made the noise again but this time shifted into 4wd a little bit later than normal but much earlier than before.
So my question to you guys is.. is there an issue with the transmission/4wd system or is this just a function of not usin the 4wd enough or something like that? could it just be a lubrication issue? Any advice? I dont want to do any damage but I need the 4wd!
