I'm having this problem last few weeks.. I have a 2001 4runner automatic and having this problem, Doesn't happen to often, But when driving my 4wd indicator light comes on the dash flashing. I know it's not in 4wd and nothing hits the shifter or button. I then pull off road and played with shifter and would go off.. Getting worse Now, I have to turn the key off and on to make lights go off. The other day I started it up and put in gear and heard a clunk and it went into 4wd low gear. The shifter and button weren't touched. I had to keep turn the key on and off to get the lights off and out of 4wd low. I feel it's a solonid or something? Any Help???

4Low?

How can it get into 4 low without you moving the High/Low lever?? There is no solenoid for that, only 4wd engagement/disengagement has one.

There's sensors on the t-case that monitor if the t-case is in 4L or 4H.

Flashing light means its not engaged. Therefore, the light is a warning.

My suggestion would be to take the sensors off the t-case, try to clean them, and see if that fixes your problem. If not, replace the sensors.

If that STILL doesn't work, then it may be your 4WD ECU.

I'm assuming you have the CLD, since you said nothing hits the button.

There could also be some corrosion in the CLD acutator, causing that light to flash like that.

I can hit the Button on the shift lever and hear the actuator Click in with a cluck noise while standing still. I can sit there and push button over and over and it does work. Lights come on and off as I do this.. What is CLD?
