4WD Limbo

My sister has a 99 that went into 4WD limbo for a while so I had her replace the transfer indicator switch last fall. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/105547-bootowns-thread.html#post948526 Now it is stuck in limbo again already (probably less than 5k on the new switch).

Is there some way to force the truck into 2WD or 4WD for now? I've had her mess with the shifting, driving/reversing, doing figure 8's, whatever....nothing is working. She's been driving it around for a few days (yeah, I know...grinding) and the 4WD lights have kept flashing the whole time. Unfortunately she is a 1,000 miles away in Boulder so I can't mess around with the truck myself.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Think she needs a new switch again already? Have someone pull the new switch and push the ball in and out a few times in case it is stuck?

If you find out the problem or have any ideas I'd be happy to help, I'm in Boulder also. I'm not really familiar with the push button 4wd but it looks really straightforward to replace the switch

Thanks for the offer! (luckily that won't be necessary now) Someone ended up coming over, pulling the switch and pushing in the end a few times, reinstalled and that fixed it for now. I'll probably have her get another new switch and put it in the next time I get out there.

Sight unseen, I'd bet the problem was in the plug/connection and messing with it got it going again. A bum switch out of the box is possible, but they should be good for 10 years plus. Mine are all original on my 1999 except the one the dealer smashed on a warranty repair.
