4wd question

I drove my 06 Limited 4WD on deep sand (beach) on 4HI without locking diff. Is it okay?
This is my first vehicle with 2wd to 4wd switch & my first T4R :frog:

When do I need to engage 4Lo? When do I need to lock diff??

I feel like there may be a sticky for this but oh well here it goes...

Lock: Sketchy off road one wheel in the air need traction moments or when you are in an environment where you won't bind the dive train *it gets harder to turn the wheel when you shouldn't do this*

Un-lock: When you are in DD pavement mode or when you are not one bit stressed about the terrain you are on because the 4runner has few challenges off road.

So with that said Mida, you could go either way in that scenario. Welcome to T4R and as always the search bar is your friend.

Honestly, I'd say if you have a V6, keep it in 2wd till you need 4wd. If you have a v8, keep it in 4hi until you need 4lo (stuck, losing traction, etc.) and lock the diff when you have difficulty in 4lo.

Nothing wrong with it but go ahead and lock the diff to decrease chance of getting stuck.

You can run sand in high range (locked) if you want. Low range can help the transmission run cooler if you're making the truck work hard. It can also deliver power to the wheels less abruptly when getting started if wheel spin is a problem.

Look for this button on the left of the steering wheel.
Push it to lock the center differential.
