4wd question

so i just read on one of the threads, that the V6 4th gens can be full time 4wd or just be put into 2wd...is this true, how do you do this?

It has a selector dial for the 4wd. If you want to use full time 4wd just leave it on the 4wd hi selector, don't use the 2wd option.
 
You can run in AWD (full-time 4WD) in both H4 and L4... it's not "traditional 4WD" (with a fixed 50/50 split) until you lock the center diff with the button to the left of the steering wheel. Don't drive on pavement though with the center diff locked. I love the options available on our V6 4Runners!
 
one more question...when i owned my jeep liberty renegade, i was able to be in 4H up to 55mph...is there any speed i cannot go passed?
 
I don't have my manual in front of me but you can switch into 4H up to some certain MPH. I want to say 50 but I can't remember. You just have to be going straight and put it into Neutral when you do it. To go into 4L you need to be completely stopped and in Neutral.
 
no speed restriction in H4 just shift in or our under 60 (actually 62 per jimithing). when you are driving in H4 you are the same as the V8 that is full time so that is why no speed restriction. a great feature for winter driving when road conditions vary

• 4HI all day long (engage either stopped or traveling 60mph or slower while going a straight line)
• 4LO = short answer, for offroad only

V8 4WD is all day, they don't have a selectable 2WD
 
How do I know when the center diff is locked? I just got my 4Runner 2 weeks ago. I ran it on 4H during some rainy conditions just to try out the 4wd and the flashing X icon was on, is it automatically on by default? or is it off and I have to turn it in?

Basically, whenever i put it on 4H the X icon starts flashing for a few seconds.

X = center locking diff

It shouldn't be on or flashing.

Test it while you are stopped & in neutral, it should turn off completely, if it doesn't, you need to bring it to the Service Department.

It flashes when i first put it on 4H then it turns off (stops flashing), that's not normal? I hit the button yesterday and it stayed on. I'm guessing this means the center diff is locked.

The center diff light is suppose to flash when it shifts between 2H and 4H. On mine, it has happened twice when it was shifting from 2H to 4H and I made a turn, it left the center diff locked after it shifted into 4H. The manual states shifting from 2H to 4H should happen when traveling straight.

My understanding is when the V6 is in two wheel drive, the center diff is locked but the front diff is disconnected at the half shaft. When you shift into 4H, the center diff unlocks and the front diff connects the half shaft.

SO for everyday driving, what would you leave it on?

For my location in the winter months, would i leave it on the same settings?
