4wd selector not working

Hi all,

I recently removed the radio on my 2004 Sport Edition v6. To do so I had to disconnect the connector to the 4WD selector. I must not have had it completed connected as the next day when my wife drove it the 4WD came on.

The selector switch is not responding now.

So I disconnected the plug on the back of the switch and then reconnected it to make sure it was completely connected.

I pulled the 4WD fuse for 5 minutes, replaced it and started the engine to see if the switch would work. It did not.

So I disconnected the battery for 5 minutes and tried again. The switch still does not work.

Any suggestions? I use 4WD at least 1x per month to make sure it stays in working order. So I've never had an issue until I had to disconnect it for the radio issue.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

I would make sure all your connections are nice and tight and then try disconnecting the battery for about 5-10 minutes (forcing a hard reset of the modules by discharging the capacitors and temporary memory.) After which, reconnect the battery; idle the vehicle with NO loads (i.e. no headlamps, no A/C, ect.) for about 5-10 minutes so the vehicle learns the idle again. Then check and see if your 4WD selector is functioning correctly again.

One more thing, '03 & '04 4Runners are prone to losing/curropting their ZPC (Zero Point Calibration) data when voltage drops below 12v. So you will need to performed a ZPC Relearn procedure to avoid setting a DTC in the ABS system.

You're other option is to have someone with an OBDII Capable Scantool pull & erase DTCs from the ECM, though you may need a Toyota capable scantool like a TIS Techstream for 4WD DTCs (they are not stored in the 4WD ECU, but rather in the ECM; so I am not sure how they are treated from a Generic OBDII Stand-point.)

I know this is a really old thread, but I'm hoping you were able to figure out how to fix this because I just had my dash apart today to do some work on the stereo and as I was re-connecting everything I didn't hear the 4wd selector click when I pressed it in so I thought I had broken the clip. Anyway, when I started it and backed it out of the garage I noticed that the 4wd indicator was on in the dash, even though the selector was still in 4hi.

I pulled back in and took everything apart so I could make sure it was all connected properly, but like you, I'm not not able to make anything happen by switching the 4wd selector between 2hi, 4hi, and 4lo.

Long question short: were you able to get yours working again, and if so, how?

I know this is a really old thread, but I'm hoping you were able to figure out how to fix this because I just had my dash apart today to do some work on the stereo and as I was re-connecting everything I didn't hear the 4wd selector click when I pressed it in so I thought I had broken the clip. Yes, I had bent one of the metal prongs when I reconnected the switch. I was able to carefully straighten it back out and get the switch working again.

Hey, thanks a lot for getting back to me on this. I went ahead and just ordered a new switch, which did the trick, but I'd be willing to bet this is what I did, too.

Another note to others.
Don't turn the 4wd selector switch after you disconnected it.
As in 2wd to 4wd.
The T4R didn't seem to like that.
