4wd shifter rattle - solution

Over the past few weeks the 4wd shifter has started to rattle. Not the normal manual 4WD shifter vibration/movement and nothing pressing against it or in the boot well. In fact pressure on it made it go away. Not an unlivable situation but annoying just the same. Also, the rattle has grown louder as time went on.

Did some searching here and found lots of suggestions, many seemed to be just stuff rubbing against the normally vibrating shifter.

Anyways, pulled the console (super easy) and test drove it without it or the shifters. No noise....

While I know they aren't intended to come off, I carefully pried the shift diagram disc off and found 2 plastic tabs and some glue that holds it on. One of my tabs was bent and vibrating against the column. Had to break the tab off but the disc is back on and now vibration free.

No idea how it happened as I've never removed the knob or even had tighten/loosen to straighten it. Oh well...

Gives me an excuse for the TRD handles I suppose.

Just my experience.....searching showed more than a few threads with a similar problem so thought I'd share.

Best Regards,
Jeff

That's interesting since I just figured out that the annoying rattle that has developed over the last couple of weeks was coming from my transfer case lever. I push on it and the noise goes away, release the pressure and the noise starts up again. I also have never taken any of that stuff apart, but I may be now! Since yours is a Trail and mine is the TRD Off Road, I believe at least the transmission shift knob is different. Not sure about the transfer case lever.

I always have rattling because I forget and throw my loose change in there only to have to move it couple seconds later.
