4wd

I have what may be a stupid question. I have seen on several sites that with the type of 4wd system I have, you need to be at 50mph or less to engage 4wd. Once engaged, is there a maximum speed you can travel at while engaged in 4wd? Also, do you have to be under 50mph to disengage?

I get careless, go in and out over 50 on snowy highways, but i never go over 60. I did it on my old 4runner as well,and did not ever have problems. Im not sure if other people have had issues though.

I dont know about your 4runner, but on mine all the 4wd info is on my sun visor!

Info is also in your manual...if you don't have one, I'd suggest picking one up. It's a good starting point to learn the ins and outs of your vehicle.

I think my 98's manual said the max speed was 45-50mph. Im not too sure about that but I never did try engaging it at any speed over 20. Oh well, where I live we can't go over 55 mph anyway.

My 01 says you can switch in and out of 4WD HIGH up to 62 mph (100kph)

for 4WD LOW you have to be at a COMPLETE STOP though

Yeah, My information is obviously on the visor as well, and in the manual. I wonder if its differs from manual to automatic transmissions? Oh, and i am not one to read a manual. I would much rather learn how my truck works by breaking things and fixing them myself so i know how things can break and learn from my mistakes.

I have an AUTO and it is on my visor also, however the sticker is peeling off and may not be there much longer. In which case I would look at my manual....or not. I am more of one to just try using it. Rule of thumb to go by..What is safe for the conditions.

if you have part time 4wd, its under 50mph to engage and no limit on traveling or disengaging. for multi mode 4wd (full time), it is 62mph to engage and i believe there is also no limit on traveling or disengaging

Sounds logical ! When you break it, go fix it. Although I don't want to break anything in my 1999 Toyota SR5 4Runner, 4WD, I sure want to know how all its functions can be operated. I stop whenever I engaged anything that has to do with 4WD. 4HI, 4LO, and back to H2. The only time I don't stop switching from H2 to H4 ( vice versa ) was when I had that push button control in the shift selector back in my Tacoma TRD days. My 4Runner doesn't have that button. Also, it doesn't take that much of a time to stop, changed shift selector and drive again :thumb3:.
