4x2 vs 4x4

So I just found out that my wife's 4runner is a 4x2 SR5 sports edition v8. I want to go off roaring is it still possible with the 4x2 or are there any modifications I need to do?

possible? absolutely. mods needed? not really, unless you plan on going on a crazy trail. will you be as capable as a 4wd model? not really but you can still go out and enjoy the truck's inherent abilities.

What kind of trails will I be able to go on? Obviously not trying to climb rocks or anything. But, give me an example when you say trails?

Go through my build thread in my link, I have a 4x2 and do some trails here and there. There are trail pictures littered throughout the thread, from basically stock up to where it is now.

It's not the same as 4x4, but it's no slouch. I've had at least 3 Jeepers look at me like I was crazy after seeing me on the trail in a 2wd.

edit- there is also a "2wd (or 4x2?) off road thread" somewhere with lots of pics and videos of 4x2 4th gens.

You may or may not need 4x4 depending on how loud you plan to roar, but that burly v8 will definitely help out with your roaring capabilities :)

Might as well sell the 4x2 now and buy a 4x4. There is a high likelihood you'll get addicted to offroading once you try it once. :tongue1:

I decided to try offroading once in my stock 4r. Now its all I can think about.

Trade it in for a 4WD now while you have the chance, while it's bone stock.
 
I vote for getting experience wheeling the 2wd.

Easier to build skills that way and having that background and experience is irreplaceable and nice to have if a 4x4 is ever purchased.
 
If you truly DO intend to off-roar with the 4x2, then I'd suggest a winch unless you'll have others with the capability to pull/push you out.
 
You don't need 4x4, that slows you down. Mine is 4x4 because it's the wife's and I don't want her having any issues in winter.

For offroad, 2WD just means more speed which is more fun. You can drive yours like a trophy truck in the Baja 1000, those are mostly 2WD.

I would suggest at least all terrain tires and a traction aid like a Detroit True-Trac limited slip (if one exists for these axles, I want one in mine) or locker. A locker will help tremendously in a 2WD, so that plus a little gas and good tires and you're gold. I'd rather be flying down a dirt/sand trail then in 3 feet of mud.
