4x4 light

My 4 runner doesnt have a 4x4 light that comes on on the dashboard when you engage the 4 wheel drive, at first i thought it was the bulb, but when i pulled the guages off i discovered that i dont even have an 4x4 indicator, anyone had anything like this happen before? or know anyway to wire a light to tell when the 4 wheel drive is on. thanks. its a late 89 model

First check the 4WD switch to see if it's connected.
It's on the passenger side of the t-case, top front.

Those are also just some puny incandescent bulbs in the gauge clusters, so it may be just an out lamp. Remove the cluster and you can access the lamps from the back.

Okay i checked the switch, which seems to be plugged in, if its what i think it is, (long wires going up from the T case? the blubs are all fine in my cluster, i pulled it off and shined a flash light through it and there isnt even a place for a 4x4 light??

The 4WD light is one of the smaller size bulbs (at least in the SR5 cluster). There are generally two different sizes that are used, both have the twist off lamp holders.
