4X4 PSA: Use It Or Lose It 5th Gen Style

I read a thread on the 4th gen side and thought it was a brilliant idea started by [MENTION=1300]Kmvreter[/MENTION]. Here is the link http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/163282-4x4-psa-use-lose-monthly-reminder.html and it talks about exercising the 4WD during the summer months. Many of you newer guys either have not used your 4WD yet or maybe did not read the manual about locking it in every month just to keep it lubricated. So, read your manual, read the link above and I will bump this thread up every month as a reminder for the 5th gen guys. Again, thanks to [MENTION=1300]Kmvreter[/MENTION] for a good thread idea!

lol luckily we have cold/snow 6-9 months of the year. I use my CDL quite a bit and the warden uses her 4wd Hi/Locker a lot also during the winter months.

I told her use it since that's why we bought it for (snow that is) since we don't put weights in the bed anymore.

never remember to use 4Low though.
 
Thank you, I just joined as I'm getting a new 2014 trail in a couple weeks with 4x4. This is helpful to know, and seems like a no-brainer since seeing it.

True and it needs to be for a minimum of 10 miles per month, not just a few blocks. (for those that haven't read the manual or might not read the other thread)
 
Does the same apply to TE's with manual transfer case? And is putting it in 4hi and driving 10 miles-ish sufficient? Or does 4lo need to be activated?

Yes, absolutely. Unless it's engaged, it's not spinning, IE, no lubrication.

4HI is all that's needed.

Owners manual, page 235, last bullet near the bottom.

--Four-wheel dive usage frequency
You should drive in four-wheel drive for at least 10 miles (16 km) each month. This will assure that the front drive components are lubricated.

On the TE all the driveline components move all the time the only difference is when you put in in 4hi you are locking the center diff transferring power to the front. No power is going to the front driveline but it spins all the time...I.E. the front drive shaft, front axle shafts and front differential spin all the time. There are a few gears in the transfer case that don't move unless you're in 4wd but like everyone has said its should be run in 4wd once a month.

Not quite. There is an ADD which disconnects the driver's side half shaft from the differential, so the half shafts spin, but the front driveshaft does not.
 
getting to many exceptions in here.


just easier if you just run it in 4hi/low and locked each month.


then every model/package/option will be covered regardless.

There is no center differential on a TE.
