I would still exercise it in both 4Lo and CDL ON once a month, the idea is to get the actuator to move so it doesn't seize up which is what typically happens.

I bought my v8 with 170k and would guess that the previous owner never even went into 4LO. With that being said, I've read people going into 4LO sometimes cant get it back into 4HI. Should I even bother messing with it?

Your mileage may vary, but my feeling is that if the actuator can get it into 4LO then you should be able to get it back out, even if it means a little effort or assistance. Normally getting it out can be assisted with a little judicious use of the hammer.

Obviously, the disclaimer here is that you can never be SURE.

Mine never liked going into 4LO easily. I felt a little adventurous yesterday and tried it again and went from drive to neutral and to reverse.

It eventually got into 4LO and I was happy because it was still working, but it didn't want to get out of 4LO so I just kept rocking it back and fourth in my driveway and eventually it did unstick and get back into 4HI.

Stuck in traffic this morning and decided to exercise my 4WD. After creeping for a few miles and noticing that traffic was moving again, I shifted back to 2HI. As soon as I accelerated I heard a loud clunk from the front and the 4HI, mid diff, and 4LO lights started flashing. No buzzer, just the lights flashing... When i was able to get off the road I shut it off and started it and only the 4WD light and VSC lights were on now. Shut it off again and started it and finally all lighters were off. Just to make sure, I again switched back to 4HI and 2HI with no further problems. Cause for concern? Was it bad that I couldn't get off the freeway right away and continued to drive?

...but, not always in 4low. Keep that 4wd actuator happy! I didn't and had to drop 2,000 + to get it replaced!

yes, keep it happy. Just got done having my actuator replaced this winter as well. Not fun to do!

I used 4 low to park on a snow bank yesterday. It was so slippery this morning and there is so much torque that the un-weighted rear wheel started spinning at idle! It got over 5mph on the speedometer, and apparently ATRAC only works if you are on the gas.

No kidding, my truck was parked for 2months. Took it wheeling last saturday, Center diff wouldnt lock. It eventually kicked in after 20mins of trying.
I bought the truck 3 years ago without a working 4lo btw. Already went thru this ordeal. I miss the 3rd gen manual shift t-case.

Cycled thru all of them on my wife's 2007.
Been a few months since I last did due to work schedule and yikes... first attempt was unsuccessful into 4Lo, but the 2nd attempt worked thankfully.
drove around the parking lot a few laps and cycled it back to 2Hi.

Changed my diff and transfer case oil. At first it didn't make a difference as engaging 4WD was slow, but after about 500 miles and rechecking this month it engages within two blinks.

Thanks for the reminder. Im headed out this weekend and just had my 120k done but still going to kick on the locker today just to be sure. I think that the auto 4wd might be my only real gripe about my 4th gen. Nothing substitutes feeling the thing move into place.

Engaging 4lo

I'm having trouble engaging 4lo in my 2009 4Runner. I can get it into 4H just fine, but when try 4lo th 4lo light flashes and beeps. I am putting it in neutral first and then switching from 4h to 4L. There has to be a thread about this somewhere but I just can't find it via search. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
