when i first got my truck it would barely work, i would have to try it for several minutes to shift in and out of 4wd. now that i have it and go wheeling more often it works instantly, good reminder.

I was so confused until I read your sig and saw you have a Trail Edition, haha. That's good! If I had a TE and the rear locker didn't work I'd be pretty upset. Gotta go see what you can crawl over now! :rockon:

After flooding my actuator during a water crossing two weeks ago I would highly recommend everybody to check the breather tube that connects to the top of the actuator housing. That tube can split and come loose. As a preventive measure it would probably be good to cut about 1" of the tube off, which is the part that often splits, and stick the tube back on. Even if you don't do water crossings, with the tube off moisture can easily enter the actuator housing and cause corrosion. I am pretty sure that many of the frozen actuators were caused by moisture and corrosion. Here the whole story and how I fixed it:

Went through everything yesterday... it all worked! It needed a run through before we head to the desert in a few weeks.

I think this only applies to 4th Gens and SR5 5th Gens. We have electronic actuators that need to be exercised once a month or so. You have a manual transfer case.

So this is a seriously newb question but what's the speed restriction on 4x4?
I've read that you can't go too fast but "too fast" or parts will start breaking but "too fast" is never defined.

There are no restrictions as of how fast you should go.
Toyota says keeps speeds below 60MPH in 4HI (applies to V6 only, V8 is full-time 4WD).

Where did you see this? I haven't seen any speed restrictions and routinely go over 60 mph in 4 Hi.
The card in the driver's side sun visor. Again, V6 only.

The limit at 60 MPH is only when you are engaging 4Hi on the fly.
So if you're on the highway traveling at 70 MPH in 2WD and you need to get into 4Hi then you need to reduce your speed to at most 60 MPH before doing so. It wont engage if you are traveling faster.
Once you're engaged in 4Hi, you can get back up to speed with no restrictions on speed limit. V6 4Hi is just like the V8 full time
Edit: I'll also add that once in 4Hi you can go back to 2WD at any limit, you don't have to drop down to 60 MPH.

Not sure if this help, but I found this on page 174 of the 2008 Owners Manual. Note that it is in a discussion of using the 4WD switch. It doesn't actually say you can't drive faster than 62 mph in H4; just that you should not use the switch at higher speeds. I'll defer to any other more expert opinions (almost any opinion is more expert than mine!) as to driving in H4 at speeds higher than 62. (I added the red font to make it easier to read.)
SHIFTING BETWEEN H2" AND H4"
(UNLOCKED)
To shift from H2" to H4" (unlocked),
reduce the vehicle speed to less than 100
km/h (62 mph) and turn the multi−mode
control switch knob fully clockwise.
If the four−wheel drive indicator light continues
to blink when you operate the multi−mode
control switch knob from the H2"
to the H4" position, this reminds you that
the transfer mode is not securely in H4"
mode. Drive straight ahead while accelerating
or decelerating.
If the four−wheel drive indicator and the
center differential lock indicator lights continue
to blink and the buzzer sounds when
you operate the multi−mode control switch
knob from the H2" to the H4" position,
this reminds you that the vehicle speed is
above 100 km/h (62 mph). Reduce the
vehicle speed to less than 100 km/h (62
mph). Operate the switch knob again.
