The new TRD FJs have the rear locker and it works in conjunction with the ATRAC which is a first.

you have one. its the button to the left of the steering wheel in 01s and 02s.

center transfer case lock and front and rear lockers (or equivalent), or awd with traction control. the only 2 ways to never lose power to a wheel

So for 4x4 4runners that dont have that center diff lock button, the button that has the stick picture of the drivetrain with the front wheels turned and with an "x" in the location of the transfer case

what does that mean?? i thought when you put the transfer case lever into 4H it was the same as locking the center diff??

I was just thinking about it and my friends 00 LTD has that button but i have no idea how its different from my 99 LTD that has no button...

Or is it if you dont have the stick figure button then you have the "4WD" button on the side of the transfercase shifter?

Since you have a '99 LIMITED that means you have the so-called "multi-mode" system, only limiteds got this feature starting in '99 I think. IIRC, this means you press a button on the shifter to go into 4WD HI (no center lock) to allow you to run in 4WD even on dry pavement. Pull back on the stick and it takes you into 4WD HI (center locked) which should be used in slippery conditions. Then if you yank the stick over to the right you go into 4WD LO (center locked always) for off-road terrain and hills and then, assuming you have the optional rear locker button to the left of your steering wheel, you can hit that button to go into 4WD LO (center locked) w/ rear locked to be used for really bad situations.

Since I have an '00 SR5 non limited, I don't have the multimode and therefore don't have the little button to alternate from 2WD HI to 4WD HI (center unlocked). When I pull the lever back to go into 4WD HI it locks the center automatically.

BTW, the original poster matty has an '01, and starting in '01 I think all 4Runners (not just limiteds) got the multimode system but with ATRAC too - and they moved the center diff lock function to a switch on the dash instead of activating it through the stick, so this may be the source of the confusion.

So I drive my 99 LTD in 4WD HI (no center lock) all the time. I don't see a lose in gas mileage and feel better about wet weather stability.
